London politics news LIVE: PM’s allies warned not to pressure police on partygate amid Cressida Dick resignation

Boris Johnson’s allies were today warned off seeking to put pressure on Scotland Yard to give the Prime Minister “special treatment” during its probe into the partygate scandal.

Sir Bob Neill, Conservative chairman of the Commons justice committee, stressed that “any suggestion of political pressure on the police is completely reprehensible”.

It comes as Dame Cressida Dick’s resignation from her role as Metropolitan Police Commissioner on Thursday sparked a war of words between Sadiq Khan and Priti Patel after the Home Office was reportedly not told the Commissioner was resigning.

In a statement on Thursday, Dame Cressida said she would move on from the role leading the force after a “short period” to ensure the “stability” of the Met.

It follows a series of scandals involving the force, including the murder of Sarah Everard by former Met officer Wayne Couzens and the force’s actions following her death in tackling a vigil held in her memory.
