London Overground strikes by RMT staff next week called off

Planned strikes next week by London Overground workers have been called off after a pay offer was improved, the RMT union announced.

Members of the RMT employed by Arriva Rail London on the Overground had been due to walk out for 48 hours on February 19 and again on March 4 in a dispute over pay.

But the union said that “progress” had been made on the pay offer previously tabled by Arriva.

An online referendum on the improved offer will be held next week.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "London Overground members working for Arriva Rail London have made progress through their determination to take strike action.

"The dispute is not over but we have made sufficient progress to suspend the action next week in order for our members to assess the new offer fully in a referendum."

Separately, rail workers in the RMT on Northern and LNER are to stage a one-day strike and ban overtime for three days in a separate row to the national pay dispute.

Members of Aslef at the two operators will walk out on March 1 and ban overtime from February 29.

The union says agreements are not being adhered to.

An LNER spokesperson said: “Our priority focus remains on minimising disruption to customers during Aslef strikes, which sadly will continue to cause disruption and delays.

“We encourage Aslef to continue to work with us to find a way to end this long-running dispute which only damages the rail industry.”

Aslef announced on Tuesday that drivers at five rail operators had voted to continue taking strike action for six months in the long-running dispute over pay and conditions.

Members on Chiltern, c2c, East Midlands, Northern and TransPennine railways had overwhelmingly backed carrying on with action, the union said.

Unions involved in disputes have to reballot their members every six months on continuing with industrial action.
