London City Airport has scrapped the 100ml limit on liquids in hand luggage. It is the first in the UK to make the change since the rules were put in place in 2006, the Metro reports.
The move - which comes just ahead of the Easter holiday period - is possible thanks to computerised tomography (CT) scans, much like those which are used in hospitals. It will allow staff to take a detailed 3D look at what is in people's hand luggage.
It is understood that a new limit of two litres (2000mls) will be introduced. It also means passengers will also no longer have to place creams and cosmetic items in a plastic bag when going through security.
Laptops also will not have to be taken out and shown separately to security staff. It is hoped that the CT scans will help speed up lengthy queues, which have hit the headlines in the past few years as travel restrictions ease following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The airport’s chief executive Robert Sinclair said: "The good news for anyone planning a holiday or a business trip is that we will be the first mainstream UK airport to offer a fully CT security experience from the end of this month.
"The new lanes will not only cut hassle but also queuing times, which I know passengers will love."
A spokesperson added: "We’re very pleased that the new machines in operation now and have our full complement of four in place ahead of the Easter getaway."
