Austin Corbett’s departure in free agency left a big void at right guard, which the Los Angeles Rams have taken steps to fill through free agency and the draft.
They re-signed Coleman Shelton to a two-year deal, which will give him a chance to compete at right guard or to back up Brian Allen at center. And on Friday night, the Rams drafted Logan Bruss in the third round.
Neither of those players will be guaranteed a starting spot on the offensive line, but they’ll give the Rams options at right guard – in addition to a couple of other candidates, too.
Bruss and Shelton will compete with Bobby Evans and Tremayne Anchrum, giving the Rams four legitimate options at right guard. They may not have a surefire starter, but the fact that they have so much depth is a great sign.
That depth and competition will allow the Rams to find the best possible option, rather than relying on one single player to step up as the starter. When training camp rolls around, the best player will win the job – whether that’s Bruss or one of the veterans.
Bruss is definitely the most intriguing option. He’s 6-foot-5 and a good athlete, and the Rams expect him to compete right away for reps at right guard. Not to mention, he allowed one sack in the last three seasons at Wisconsin, playing extremely well at both tackle and guard.
We won’t know who the starting right guard will be until training camp, but at least the Rams have left the door wide open for someone to earn the job.
