Lockerbie racer Gordie Mutch crowned inaugural Praga Cup champion

Gordie Mutch was crowned the inaugural Praga Cup champion in style at the weekend with a double win at Donington.

The Lockerbie driver and his team mate Jimmy Broadbent arrived at the final week with a 19 point lead in the championship with two races remaining.

Donington is one of Mutch’s most successful tracks and he had high hopes entering the weekend. And he was able to deliver a near-perfect weekend for Fanatec Praga Team87.

Gordie, 20, said: “It was a great weekend. It couldn’t have gone much better really.

“The only way it could’ve gone better was if we picked up pole position in qualifying.

“We got denied that chance when there was a red flag but they ended the session. There was plenty of time to carry on but they ended the session for some reason. It was quite bizarre.

“But the rest of the weekend we got two firsts and both races we had the fastest lap so it was a fantastic weekend.”

Mutch and Broadbent started second on the grid on Saturday before winning race one to seal the title. Second place Mittel Cars could have matched Team87’s points if they recorded the fastest lap and won the race and Team87 failed to finish however with the points tied it would have went to the team with the most race wins which was Gordie and Broadbent.

But race two saw the duo start the race in front and they ended it in first place with Gordie setting the fastest lap on the final lap of the season to secure a double win weekend to go with the Praga Cup.

Gordie said: “It feels great.

“I expected myself to win. I put that expectation on myself and people expected us to win going into the last weekend. There was a little bit of relief but the work for next year has already started.

“But I’m going to have a few days to enjoy it before getting back to work.”

Gordie is backed by the Eco Group, John Clark Motor Group, Sparco and Bell.
