Drunk man sparks mass evacuation from apartment block
Children were forced to flee from an apartment block when their drunken neighbour set fire to his own flat.
Anthony Doyle, 48, told fire crews he couldn’t escape when flames took hold in his flat at St David’s Court, in Cheetham Hill.
Firefighters entered the property with breathing equipment but drunken Doyle “hid” from them and they were forced to use thermal imaging cameras to find and help him to safety, a court heard.
Former bus driver Doyle was said to be “heavily intoxicated” during the incident last January 24 and has no memory of what happened.
He has now been jailed for 27 months after pleading guilty to arson being reckless.
Doyle, of St David’s Court, in Cheetham Hill, has previous convictions for criminal damage and affray.
Doyle was jailed for 27 months and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
A drug driver killed a beloved dad-of-four speeding in Range Rover at 60mph through town centre - he spent the next year posting pictures of himself in front of expensive cars
A man who pretended to be his brother to hire a Range Rover then ran over and killed a loving dad-of-four after driving on a cocktail of drugs.
But in the months before being put behind bars, the driver, Rizwan Ali, continuously posted pictures and videos of himself with expensive cars on his public social media account while his victim's family were going through hell. The most recent being just five days ago.
Colin Olawumi, a 65-year-old care home worker, was walking across the road at a pedestrian crossing when he was knocked down by a Range Rover Sport in Topp Way, Bolton, on August 18, 2018.
The hired 4x4 was being driven at almost 61mph - twice the speed limit - by Ali.
Ali had been stopped at a traffic light moments earlier, but accelerated hard once the lights turned green, even speeding up just one second prior to impact with Mr Olawumi.
Police and paramedics were scrambled to the scene, but tragically Mr Olawumi died lying in the road.
Ali was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit, causing death while driving uninsured and fraud.
Ali continued to fight the case until the very last moment, traumatising Mr Olawumi's family for 18 months. He only pleaded guilty to fraud in January and then waited until the day the jury was to be sworn in for a trial on March 2 this year to plead guilty to the rest of the charges.
Ali, of Russell Street in Heaton, has had no previous convictions of any kind, including driving offences, and there were several statements read out in court from friends and family which described him as ‘honourable’ and ‘trustworthy’.
As his consumption of the drugs was around 17 hours before the crash, it is not believed they influenced his driving abilities.
Judge Smith handed Ali a sentence of 41-months imprisonment, with a driving ban of four years and 8 months

He repeatedly sent messages to his ex-partner on Facebook saying that he was going to turn up at her new partner's house in Oldham and kill him.

But now he has been jailed after his fingerprints were found on a can of cider he left on the counter.
Murambakanda, 30, was a regular customer at the off-licence, the Bottle's Top on Ashton New Road in Droylsden, so the shopkeeper was surprised when he turned violent on April 23 this year, a court heard.
He walked into the shop at 3.30pm, selected a can of cider and placed it on the counter before he grabbed the shopkeeper, pulled him across the counter and pressed a kitchen knife to his ear, prosecutor Kate Gaskell told Minshull Street Crown Court on Wednesday.
The defendant ordered the terrified shopkeeper to open the till and give him £50 but his victim managed to remove the knife from his attacker's hand, the court was told.
Murambakanda ran from the shop empty-handed, leaving the shopkeeper to pull down the shutters and call the police.
His victim suffered a cut to his right ear but did not require hospital treatment.
Jailing him for two years and eight months, Judge Bernadette Baxter told Murambakanda it was clear from the footage it had been a 'very upsetting experience' for the shopkeeper and that shopkeepers were 'particularly vulnerable'.
Murambakanda, of no fixed abode, admitted attempted robbery and possessing a knife.

Philip Hall, 39, ran a kitchen knife across the stomach of one terrified victim.
When another tried to intervene he shouted: "I will slit your throat and kill you."
He was angry that the caretaker of the block, on Bury Road in Rochdale, had erected 'Covid 19' notices ordering residents to keep communal doors open to prevent people from having to grab door handles.
Having been 'cooped up for so long' during the lockdown, Hall grabbed a kitchen knife and vented his frustration on terrified fellow residents.
Now he has been jailed.
Jailing Hall for ten months, Judge Bernadette Baxter told Hall: "The whole situation must have been very frightening for anybody coming upon it. The reality of the situation is that you are your own worst enemy.
"You have little insight into your problems and have really failed to engage with help offered to you in the past. In my judgement the only appropriate sentence for you at the moment is immediate custody."
Hall, of Bury Road in Rochdale, had been convicted following an earlier trial at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court of affray, assault and possessing a knife. He had denied the offences.

Drama teacher 'groomed and manipulated' impressionable pupil, 13, who was coming to terms with her sexuality - the abuse left her suicidal
A drama teacher who 'groomed and manipulated' an 'extremely impressionable' teenage pupil has been jailed for nine months.
The victim was just 13 and struggling to come to terms with her sexuality, when Kim Connor, 46, began grooming her.
Connor gave the girl tickets to West End shows including Cabaret and a gig by songwriter KT Tunstall and invited her to sing in a choir with her on a stage at a Sir Rod Stewart concert in Manchester.
The girl became 'enthralled and besotted' with Connor, while the victim's unsuspecting parents mistakenly assumed the teacher was mentoring their daughter.
They went on holiday together to Portugal, had meals out at restaurants and nights away in hotels.
The victim kept the abuse secret until 2018 when the spread of the #MeToo movement led to her contacting police.
At Minshull Street Crown Court, the victim broke down in tears in the public gallery as Connor was led away by prison guards.
The pair met when the girl enrolled at a performing arts school in Salford where Connor had joined the drama department and where fellow teachers described her as 'trustworthy, truthful and an honest person of morals and integrity'.
The court heard the two later became close and when she turned 13, Connor, of Blyton Lane, Salford, began to offer the teenager weekly private tuition at her home.
Connor, a mother of two, was found guilty of three offences of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust and a further three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity by a person in a position of trust.
She denied wrongdoing claiming the relationship only began when the girl was 18 and said they grew close following the Rod Stewart concert.
Connor was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.

His defence team say Sithole was peddling drugs only to help his family and the drugs were provided to him by a dealer.
But Judge Michael Leeming said he was satisfied it was Sithole’s own drug operation.
“There’s no suggestion to my mind that you have been exploited at all or set up by others to sell drugs,” he said.
Sithole, from Gorton, was jailed for 32 months at Manchester Crown Court.
Judge Leeming said he could not suspend the sentence despite Sithole’s age and previous good character.
He jailed the defendant for 32 months - a sentence he will serve half of before he is eligible for parole.

Jamie Forster, 21, has been locked up for 12 years - with a four-year extended licence period - following the two horrific incidents.
Police dubbed the attacks 'random and shocking'. Forster, a detective said, was a 'great threat' to the community.
Minshull Street Crown Court heard that on July 13, 2019, Forster shouted at two men who were on their way to get food from a takeaway on Washway Road in Sale.
Prosecutor Michael Blakey said the men ignored him, before one of them then realised he had seen Forster before in a pub.
A friend Forster was with pulled out a blade '30 to 40 inches in length'.
Forster grabbed it and slashed at one of the men, who fell to the floor.

Their crime wave made it feel like law and order had completely broken down in parts of Manchester - They bragged about it on Snapchat
Two teenagers have been locked up for their part in a crime wave which made it appear as if there had been 'almost a complete breakdown in law and order in north and east Manchester'.
The pair showed 'complete disregard' for the police and thought they were 'above the law', a judge said.
They ran amok, terrorising residents in areas such as Newton Heath, Harpurhey, Moston and Collyhurst.
Kyron Blackley, 18, from Harpurhey, committed 41 offences during a period of around nine months during 2019.
These included four robberies in which a knife, machete or hammer were used. The victim of one incident - a disabled man - considered ending his own life.
Another, a Deliveroo rider who sought refuge in the UK, now wants to leave the country.
Blackley and his associates 'bragged' about their crimes on Snapchat. During one incident, he kicked an elderly man in the face before turning to the camera and laughing.
The judge said 'a message had to be sent' that long prison sentences would follow for such offences - 'regardless of age' - as he sent Blackley down for nine years.
A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to five years.
Blackley, of Thorntree Close, Harpurhey, denied three counts of robbery, but was found guilty after two trials.

The second attack happened in March as the country went into lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus.
A judge said Ashraf’s offending was so serious that only immediate custody was appropriate and he was jailed for 12 months.
Ashraf, of Lowther Road, Rochdale, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault, five counts of assault of an emergency worker and common assault.
This relates to the two separate incidents on January 17 and March 30 of this year.

Southern Comfort-fuelled thug battered his sister after getting taxi from Manchester to Liverpool and drinking for 18 hours
A thug battered his sister after drinking Southern Comfort for 18 hours straight.
Nathan Wilson, 33, from Hyde, was already knocking back whiskey as he travelled by taxi from Manchester to Liverpool.
A court heard he made the journey in the middle of the coronavirus lockdown, but went on to claim he had no idea of the restrictions affecting the country.
He arrived at young mum Natasha Perkins' home in Everton at around 1pm, on Sunday, April 26, and they bought another bottle.
Liverpool Crown Court heard they 'continued to drink through the day and the night', reports the Liverpool Echo.
Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, said: "They eventually retired to bed at around 6am, on Monday, April 27."
A judge was told they were in the same room, with Wilson sleeping on the floor, and continued to chat.
Ms Perkins said they were talking about where Wilson used to live when his voice and body language suddenly changed.
Mr Blasbery said Wilson stood up, started shouting and grabbed her by the hair, then pulled her down before banging her head on the floor at least three times.
Ms Perkins alleged to police he also punched and kicked her, before leaving the home.
She suffered a swollen and bruised left eye, which she could not see out of, a cut to her nose and a cut underneath one eye, cuts and grazes to her cheek and forehead, and an injury to her little finger, the court was told.
When arrested and interviewed, Wilson initially made no comment, but went on to describe his sister's account as 'bulls***'.
Wilson, of Moorfield Drive, Hyde, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm on a basis of plea, which was accepted by the Crown.
He said they were half siblings with different dads and he was angered by an allegation she made against his father.
Wilson accepted grabbing her hair and banging her head on the floor, causing her injuries, but insisted he then left, the court heard.
He denied ever punching or kicking her, damaging her property, or returning upstairs to continue the assault.
Wilson was jailed for six months and made the subject of a 10-year restraining to protect his sister.
Thugs stashed £25,000 into drink bottles and planned to hurl them over prison wall

The pair travelled to south Wales from the Birmingham area to carry out the task in a bid to pay off debts to a criminal currently serving time for "serious firearms offences", Cardiff Crown Court was told on Tuesday.
However their plan unravelled when they were spotted acting suspiciously outside HMP Parc in Bridgend by an off-duty police officer at around 9pm on April 18 this year, Wales Online reports.
Clancy, from Oldham, and Heney, from Manchester, were sat in a white van nearby before driving off.
The pair had previously entered guilty pleas to eight counts each of conspiracy to supply drugs at an earlier hearing.
Judge Richard Twomlow handed Heney, of Poplar Road, Manchester, four years and 10 months in custody.
Clancy, of Lychgate Court, Oldham, was sentenced to six years in custody which includes time for breaching a suspended sentence at the time of the latest offences.
Sex beast prowled the streets as he hunted would-be victims
Prowling sex offender Jason Bursk was caught on camera as he hunted another would-be victim.
He got into the home of a stranger in Radcliffe, Bury, in the early hours.
Using what police described as 'his usual method', he had been trying doors until he found one that was open.
After getting into the house through an insecure front door, he went upstairs and was about to enter a child's bedroom.
But the female occupant had been alerted by the alarm on her doorbell that the door was open.
She suspected the wind had blown it open. She had no idea Bursk was inside.
The man dubbed a 'dangerous sexual predator' by police was disturbed by the woman's dogs, which barked loudly as they sensed an intruder.
Bursk ran downstairs and unlocked the door before fleeing into the street. He had been inside the house for only a few minutes.

Mr Jawferdeen, who lives in Blackburn and had been visiting family for Ramadan, had previously had an affair with Yusuf's wife in 2018, prosecution barrister Wayne Jackson told Bolton Crown Court on Wednesday.
The affair had left Yusuf feeling "incensed" and he had made violent threats towards Mr Jawferdeen at the time.
The court heard that when Yusuf, of Swan Lane, Daubhill, saw Mr Jawferdeen on May 8 2019, he began to accelerate, before losing control and hitting the victim with his car.
Yusuf's car also spun 180 degrees and "shunted" Mr Jawferdeen's parked car, which had his wife and 17-month-old son inside.
Mr Jawferdeen, who suffered a serious fracture to his lower fibula, said he had initially been "fearing for his life" and described his injury as "agonising". Since the attack, he has made a significant recovery but still has some issues with running.
Mr Jawferdeen and his family say they have now forgiven Yusuf and did not wish to make a formal victim personal statement, Mr Jackson told the court.
Yusuf, who was previously jailed in 2010 for grievous bodily harm, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving in March 2020. He had previously denied knowing that it was Mr Jawferdeen and that it was a coincidence.
Judge Graeme Smith sentenced Yusuf to two years imprisonment, with one year to be spent in custody and the other year on licence.
Yusuf was also banned from driving for two years, with the disqualification due to start upon his release from prison.
Fifteen computers, iPhones, cash, a gold chain, two wedding rings, gold earrings and a ring - the one-man burglary spree that devastated businesses
Companies counting the cost of the coronavirus crisis had further stress after a prolific burglar struck.
A firm of solicitors had thousands of pounds-worth of computer equipment stolen in two separate break-ins committed by 31-year-old Matthew Cummins - who then targeted other city centre premises.
He struck at Field Fisher solicitors in Peter Street on March 2, stealing seven laptops worth more than £6,200.
Cummins, from Salford, then returned a week later, taking a further eight computers worth £7,800.
The firm said the impact of the burglaries is 'massive', especially as businesses contend with the pandemic.
Cummins was arrested on April 21.
Although the offences were committed before lockdown, prosecutors said the impact has added to the additional pressures companies are facing due to the coronavirus.
The court heard Cummins, of Kiwi Street, Salford, has 39 previous convictions for 74 offences. The judge said he had a 'shocking record for offences of dishonesty', including burglary.
Judge Anthony Cross QC jailed Cummins for two-and-a-half years.

The incident was caught on camera.
Gareth Carr, who punched Mr Sharratt with a 'very strong blow', has been jailed for 21 months.
Five other bouncers - including the head doorman that night - were spared jail.
They attacked Mr Sharratt and his friend Leon Cooper after the pair were asked to leave the club.

Javad Yousefi-Solimonbolagh, 25, was punched himself, but then attacked both men.
Mohammed Saleem, 22, the head doorman that night, punched Mr Cooper.
Amjad Yasin, 38, a dad-of-six, punched Mr Sharratt in the head, and 'tall and powerfully built' Carr landed a 'very strong blow' on him, which caused him to fall to the ground.
Carr, 21, also punched Mr Cooper in the head.
Ilayas dragged Mr Cooper to the ground and held him, while others attacked him.
Lee Clark, 42, also punched Mr Cooper.
After being arrested all the defendants, except Yasin, claimed their actions were in self-defence.
Carr later pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Sharratt.
He and the other five defendants also admitted affray.
Jailing Carr for 21 months, Judge Goddard told him: "You caused serious lasting injuries to a member of the public, in circumstances where it was your duty to prevent violence, not use it unlawfully."
Yasin, of Latimer Street, Oldham, who now works in a bakery, was sentenced to 15 months in prison, suspended for two years.
'Experienced' doorman Clark, of Epson Avenue, Sale, received 17 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Thug threatened his ex and housemate with knife
A violent thug said he wanted to kill his ex-girlfriend and her housemate in a shocking confession made to police.
Krzysztof Golba told officers he feared he would attack again after he was arrested for threatening his former partner with a knife in her own home.
The incident happened when the 28-year-old returned to Salford after going back to his home country of Poland.
His ex-girlfriend wished to help him and arranged for him to stay at her mother’s house on Nursery Street.
He stayed there for three months where he began drinking and using drugs – something he had struggled with in the past.
Becoming increasingly concerned for his welfare, Bolton Crown Court heard how his ex-girlfriend suggest he stay at her Eccles home instead.
However, his drinking persisted which caused him to act paranoid. The police were called to the Renshaw Street property for drink-related incidents on several different occasions.
He eventually moved out of the property and into his home address.
The court heard how his former partner did not hear from him again until he approached her in April this year.
Krzysztof Golba pleaded guilty to affray, possession of a knife and threatening with a knife. He received 14 months imprisonment and was handed a restraining order.
This duo travelled up from London to blow up a BMW in Bolton... they were given a box containing a grenade and told: 'ask no questions'
Two men who were 'hired' to travel up from London to blow up a BMW on a Bolton back street have been jailed.
Darren Holland and Tom Omona were told to 'ask no questions' before travelling to the North West to carry out the grenade attack in Back Castle Street.
They used two stolen cars as part of the enterprise, which they later burned out before returning to the capital.
The pair were jailed for their roles in the 'carefully planned' attack at Bolton Crown Court.
The court heard that Holland and Omona had travelled up from London in a Silver Renault on July 23 last year.
They first arrived in Rochdale around 6.30pm and met Luqman Hamid.
He was not a conspirator but played a key role by providing them with two stolen cars, a white 13 plate Nissan Qashqai and a white 12 plate Mini which had cloned number plates.
Holland, of Grange Farm Close, Harrow, was identified when his picture was shown to a police officer in the capital who recognised him from previous incidents.
Omona, of Mary Close, Stanmore, London, was spotted and arrested when police raided the address of the registered keeper of the Renault.
Omona, 29, had previously admitted conspiracy to cause an explosion and conspiracy to cause arson – to destroy motor vehicles by fire.
Holland had previously admitted arson for conspiring to set fire to cars but denied conspiracy to cause an explosion.
However, he was found guilty of playing a 'pivotal role' in the attack at a trial back in February.
Meanwhile, Hamid, of Yorkshire Street, Rochdale, admitted to three counts of encouraging or assisting offences, as well as separate counts of possession with the intent to supply cannabis and possession of criminal property.
Omona was jailed for 11-and-a-half years, while Holland and Hamid were sentenced to nine years and nine months and five years respectively.
The teen who was asked by a shop worker to respect social distancing - so he viciously turned on her
A teenage thug threatened to stab a shop worker after being asked to comply with social distancing measures, a court heard.
Mason Clemans, 18, has been jailed for a year following the incident at a branch of Bargain Booze in Salford.
He threatened to stab a shop worker, and later showed the handle of a knife hidden in his waistband like a 'fake gangster', a judge said.
Clemans had entered the shop on Bolton Road and picked up a carton of orange juice, before going to the till.
When asked to comply with the store's social distancing measures, he threw the carton to the floor and launched into a foul mouthed, threatening rant, prosecutor Duncan Wilcock said.
At about 1pm on April 29, Clemans told the female worker: "I'm going to stab you. I'm going to get your till.
"Who are you f****** talking to, you piece of sh**. I will come round there and stab you."
He was persuaded to leave by friends, and kicked a shop display over on his way out.
Before leaving, he lifted up his top to reveal a knife in his trousers.
Clemans, of Bank Lane, Salford, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article, affray and criminal damage.
The burglars who travelled from Wigan to target an affluent Cheshire suburb
Burglars who travelled from Wigan to target a Cheshire home were caught out by two eagle-eyed builders and an off-duty police officer.
David Warburton and Dwayne Madden travelled from Wigan to Knutsford to target a home in the affluent suburb of Knutsford.
The pair broke into an address on Bexton Lane on the morning of February 7 and helped themselves to cash and jewellery.
But as they searched the property, they activated the burglar alarm which caught the attention of two builders who were working at a nearby property.
When the workmen investigated they found that the back door had been damaged and spotted Warburton and Madden acting suspiciously nearby.
The builders got into touch with the owner of the property they were working on who passed the information onto her son - a serving police officer.
The policeman made his way to the scene and contacted Cheshire Constabulary.
He then began searching the area for the burglars.
Madden, 28, was found by the off-duty officer on Gough Road and arrested by officers from Cheshire Constabulary.
Warburton, 28, was located and arrested by a Cheshire officer in a wooded area near to Toft Road.
The two burglars, both from Wigan, have now been jailed for a combined total of seven years.
Both men pleaded guilty to burglary at Chester Crown Court on Friday, July 10.
Warburton, of Moss Lane, Platt Bridge, was jailed for four years.
Madden, of Sycamore Avenue, Golborne, was handed a three-year prison sentence.
They were also ordered to each pay a £181 victim surcharge.
Drug addict's brazen crime spree at local shop to fund his habit - until one man had the courage to stand up to him
A drug addict terrorised a community while committing a one-man crime wave to feed his habit, brazenly stealing from a convenience store before robbing several people while they used the cash machine outside.
Crack cocaine and heroin addict Billy Downing, 31, lived just 50 metres from the One Stop Shop on Grey Mare Lane in Beswick, east Manchester, which he targeted on numerous occasions.
Many of the people he robbed, including a disabled man with one leg, were able to recognise him and identify him to police.
One victim attempted suicide because he was so affected by his ordeal at Downing's hands.
A judge said Downing was 'emboldened' by remaining undetected for many months.
Prosecutors said that the shop stopped reporting thefts after 'very little was done' by local police.
It was only months later, when more senior officers from one of GMP's specialised units became involved, that Downing's offending behaviour was pieced together.
Now Downing has received a 17-year sentence.
Sentencing, Judge Anthony Cross QC said Downing's offences demonstrated how he felt 'above the forces of law and order'.
Downing pleaded guilty to nine counts of robbery, 15 counts of theft, two counts of racially aggravated harassment, two counts of criminal damage and one count of possessing cannabis.
The robberies all relate to incidents at the cash machine, and the theft counts were all committed at the One Stop Shop.
Downing, formerly of Grey Mare Lane, received a 13-year custodial sentence, with an additional four years on licence.
He will serve two-thirds of the 13 year jail term, before the Parole Board decide whether it is safe to release him.
Police pulled over car for having suspicious number plates and found a huge stash of cash and drugs
Suspicious police who stopped a car were unwittingly led to a huge stash of drugs and cash.
Officers noticed a VW Passat being driven on Kingsway in Burnage, which appeared to have had its number plates 'stuck on'.
They decided to stop the car, containing Albanian nationals Olsi Goga and Valten Gjini, both 33, and became more suspicious when they found watering cans and fertiliser in the car.
The officers described the pair as being 'evasive' when they were asked questions, Manchester Crown Court heard.
They were initially arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, but were de-arrested for that offence.
The judge jailed both men for 12 months.
Both pleaded to possession with intent to supply cannabis and possession of criminal property.

A drug dealer was caught with heroin worth £75,000 hidden in a secret compartment of a van.
Gavin Lloyd, 27, has now been jailed for seven and a half years.
Police stopped a Citroen Berlingo van Lloyd was driving on the M62 motorway in March and discovered a stashed carrier bag of heroin.
Photographs released by Greater Manchester Police reveal a hole had been cut out of the van's chassis.
Wooden boards were then used to seal the compartment from view under a floor covering.
GMP said a number of mobile phones, one encrypted, were also discovered in the van, together with £3,500 cash.
The force said the total amount of heroin weighed in at more than three quarters of a kilo and had a street value of £75,000.
Lloyd, of Norden View, Norden, Rochdale, was arrested at the scene.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply heroin and cannabis, and money laundering, and at Liverpool Crown Court, has now been sentenced.

An 'immature' teenager with a shocking record of 26 convictions for 40 offences - who has breached 'every court order ever made against him' - has been locked up.
Anthony Daly, 18, has had a 'very troubling life', his lawyer said before he was sent down.
Previous offences include knife-related incidents, possession of an offensive weapon and robbery.
Now Daly, from Salford, has been jailed following a police chase which saw him ram a stolen car into another vehicle, smash into a tree and try to escape from police while at hospital.
Appearing via videolink, Daly, of Brindle Heath Road, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving; possession of a knife; and criminal damage.
He was sentenced to 16 months in a young offender institute and banned from driving for 12 months.
The 'daring but careless' burglar now 'contemplating his crime spree from a cell'
A burglar branded 'daring but careless' by police has been locked up after he targeted the same railway station five times.
James Bird, 59, 'forgot that the railway is a CCTV-rich environment', said British Transport Police, who brought him to justice.
His crime spree over eight months caused thousands of pounds worth of damage at Stockport railway station.
Bird, of Durham House, Old Chapel Street, Edgeley, which is near the station, was arrested after his fourth break-in carrying a torch and a chisel.
He's now been jailed for 21 months.
At Manchester Crown Court, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, BTP said.
Details have only just been published.
Bird also received a 12 week sentence to run consecutively for breaching a previous order, the force said in a statement.
Knifeman threatened taxi driver, weeks after being released from jail mistakenly after robbing another driver from the same firm
A knifeman threatened a taxi driver after refusing to pay his fare, just weeks after being released from prison for robbing another driver who worked for the same firm.
Samuel Burrows, 24, has been handed another jail term after the incident in Wythenshawe.
"I don't care about jail," Burrows said as he pointed a 10-inch kitchen knife at the driver.
He had been released early from his previous sentence by 'mistake', a court was told.
The terrified taxi driver later said: "My life is worth more than the price of a taxi fare."
The court was told Burrows had been out of jail for 18 days when the incident occurred.
He was previously sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for robbing a taxi driver who worked for the same firm.
Burrows, another man and a then 16-year-old girl set upon the driver in Wythenshawe after falsely claiming a fare as their own.
Burrows pleaded guilty to threatening with a blade and damaging property.
He was sentenced to 10 months in jail.

A drunk driver was caught parked on the hard shoulder of the M60 with a child on his lap - before he punched a police officer.
Wayne Garcia, 35, has been jailed for nine months after he was found to be more than twice the drink drive limit in the early hours.
He hit a police officer in the face after being challenged about his behaviour, leaving him with a broken tooth and possible fractured cheekbone.
Manchester Crown Court heard police spotted Garcia parked on the anticlockwise section of the motorway in Trafford, at junction five, at around 3.45am on June 24.
Part of the motorway had to be shut off while police responded.
When they arrived, police found Garcia sat in the driver's seat of a Mercedes with a child sat on his knee.
Prosecutor John Kennerley said they noted a 'strong smell of alcohol' and said that Garcia was 'slurring his words'.
He got out of the car and 'staggered' towards the road, the court heard.
Garcia, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to being drunk while in charge of a child under the age of seven; drink driving; two counts of assaulting an emergency worker; driving without a licence; and driving without insurance.
He was also banned from driving for three years and four months.
A drunken thug stabbed ex-partner in street after she had sex with another man
A drunken thug stabbed his ex-partner in the street after discovering that she had sex with another man.
Michael Marsh attacked the woman moments after slashing the face of one of her friends who tried to intervene in an argument between the pair.
The trio had spent the day drinking at a friend's house before the attack, in Wigan Lane, Wigan, on the evening of May 14.
But things turned sour when Marsh discovered his ex-partner had slept with someone else while they were there.
An argument ensued, resulting in Marsh stabbing the victim in the stomach with a Stanley knife.

Shane Trivass, of Widnes, punched one of the officers in the face as she approached him and asked if he was okay in the early hours of June 21 this year.
The 22-year-old then grabbed and dragged her by the hair before punching the officer in the face a second time.
A colleague came to the officer’s aid, only for Trivass to punch her in the face as well, Chester Crown Court heard earlier this week.
He also twisted her wrist to get free from her grip before fleeing on foot.
The incident left the first officer that Trivass assaulted with three haematomas (solid swellings of clotted blood), concussion, two black eyes and a cut on her head that needed to be glued at hospital.
The other officer sustained a swollen and bruised cheek, a cut lip and sore fingers.
Trivass pleaded guilty to assaulting a person causing them actual bodily harm, as well as assaulting an emergency worker.

The sick paedophile who used his position as a football coach to groom and sexually abuse young boys
A sick paedophile who used his position as a football coach to groom and sexually abuse young boys has been jailed.
Anthony Marino, now 70, abused his role at a youth team in Wythenshawe in the 1990s.
He has now faced justice decades later, and has been locked up for five years.
Marino was in his 40s when he committed the crimes, against three boys all aged under 16.
Manchester Crown Court heard that Marino would use his position as a ruse to invite them around to his home, before sexually abusing them.
He gave one of his victims a piece of football kit after the abuse as a 'gift', the court was told.
One victim attended Marino's house believing he was going to be invited to join his football team.
Marino told the boy he needed to take part in an 'initiation ceremony' to test whether he was 'man enough' to join the team, prosecutor David Bentley said.
Marino, of Rowarth Road, Wythenshawe, pleaded guilty to five counts of indecency with a child, and one count of indecent assault.
The topless lout who'd sunk 'a very large quantity of alcohol indeed' bashed pal over the head with a weight
A drunken lout attacked a man with a weight set before police had to use a spit guard to protect themselves at the height of lockdown.
Peter Finnagan, 37, also racially abused an officer as he continued to behave aggressively towards police.
CCTV from the block of flats in Wythenshawe showed Finnagan topless and smeared with blood, as he and his victim both barely able to stand after they both had drunk a 'very large quantity of alcohol indeed'.
Manchester Crown Court heard that the Finnagan lived in the same block of flats as the victim.
Finnagan had joined him and another man for an afternoon drinking session on April 7, on the third week of lockdown.
None of the three men can recall what caused the argument, but a 'drunken quarrel' ensued in the victim's flat, prosecutor Bob Elias said.
Finnagan then used an improvised weapon, a weight that was part of a weightlifting set, and was being used as a door stop.
He hit the man over the head with it, causing a 'significant' cut.
The man also suffered a fractured finger, and a suspected broken nose.
Finnagan, Bideford Drive, Wythenshawe, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.
He pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm, racially aggravated harassment and two counts of assaulting emergency workers.
This 96-year-old man 'ruined many lives' and used his position in society to cover up his secret
A 96-year-old former Catholic priest has been jailed for sexually abusing six boys more than 30 years ago.
All but one of Father John Kevin Murphy’s victims came forward to police after seeing media reports about him being imprisoned in 2017 for molesting other boys.
Liverpool Crown Court heard he had been ordained as a priest in 1962 and served in a number of parishes in Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Lancashire until he retired.
He was described in court as 'a predatory paedophile' who used his position as a Catholic priest to groom and subsequently abuse children for some 27 years
The six victims, who were aged between eight and 16 at the times of the offences, were molested while he took them on swimming lessons and also while visiting the homes of their devout Catholic parents.
Some felt unable to speak out because they knew it would devastate their parents.
Frail Murphy, who sat in the dock wearing a face mask and with his head bowed throughout the hour and a half long hearing, was jailed for five years.
Murphy, of Hillside Crescent, Horwich, Bolton, had pleaded guilty to 32 offences involving indecent assault and indecency.
Judge Anil Murray, who had jailed him for three years in December 2017 for the previous offences, told the defendant, "Your offending has had a devastating impact on your victims for decades and they are still really seriously affected by what you did."
Murphy, who formerly served in the Army and RAF, was given an extended licence for 12 months and ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The disgraced, perverted ex-mayor who couldn't help but try for a return to politics - being on the sex offender register ruined his plan
A former mayor made to sign the sex offender register after being convicted of a string of sickening crimes against children changed his name in a bid to become a councillor in Greater Manchester.
John Beirne, 59, admitted historic sexual offences in June 2017.
He pleading guilty to two counts of indecent assault on a boy aged eight to ten; two counts of indecent assault on a boy aged ten to 11; indecent assault of a boy aged 11 to 12; and three counts of indecency with a child.
The former mayor of St Helens was handed a 16-month sentence, suspended for two years at Liverpool Crown Court.
On March 8, 2019, while subject to conditions of the sex offender register, Beirne his name on the electoral role be changed to John Blondel.
Later that month, on March 27, he submitted an application to run for election as an independent councillor in Wigan.
In the application booklet, Beirne signed his name as John Blondel, acknowledging that he was not disqualified from being a candidate - despite his previous sentencing barring him from running as a councillor.
Officials at Wigan council conducting due diligence on candidate applications discovered John Blondel to be John Beirne and contacted GMP.
Beirne had not contacted police at any point to notify officers of his name change, as he was required to do so.
Beirne answered ‘no comment’ to all questions posed when interviewed.
Beirne, of School Way, Pemberton, has now been locked up for 16 months.
