Lockdown life at Leeds Kitty Café with 30 adorable cats

For many of us, life at home in lockdown consists of binge watching Netflix and constantly raiding the fridge for food - but staff at the Leeds Kitty Café are continuing to work around the clock.

The Leeds city centre café, which opened in December 2017, has quickly become a hugely popular place to visit for cat lovers from across Yorkshire.

There are currently 30 cats who call the Leeds café their home, and although the doors are currently closed and no customers are visiting, the cats still need plenty of love and attention.

"Cats like structure and interaction so we are very keen to keep that the same," said Kate Charles-Richards, owner of the Leeds Kitty Café.

"The cats need to keep seeing people because they are used to it. They are all very happy, but they are super needy because they are used to seeing lots of people.

"As soon as you walk through the door, they jump onto you."

To ensure the cute cats in Leeds are well cared for, the café's huge team of staff and volunteers are still going into work every single day, although social distancing measures have been put in place to keep them apart.

"We try to keep things the same as much as possible," said Kate, 33. "We are trying to keep to their routine.

"Staff and volunteers are going in every single day without fail. They arrive at 9am and stay all day to play with the cats, top up the food and empty the litter trays.

"They go to the café in the morning as they usually would and they stay until the cats go to sleep."

Although the cats are still having a great time, things are much more tricky for Kate and her workforce of up to 90 staff members and volunteers across the country.

Not only is there the café in Leeds to maintain, but there are two others in Birmingham and Nottingham too. With around 30 cats at each centre, a mammoth team of almost 90 people are needed - one person per cat.

However, with the coronavirus pandemic meaning the cafés can no longer open for the foreseeable future, their income has ground to a halt almost overnight.

'It's a nightmare situation'

Kate said: "We have lost all of our revenue and with up to 90 cats to support, it's not cheap.

"We run as a rescue centre, so we have all the vet bills and other costs to support.

"We are doing our very best to take care of our staff the best we can. We committed to paying them as much as we could before we try and claim it back.

"We are eligible for the government's furlough scheme, but so far it has been very, very difficult to get it through. At the moment, the government are not letting us put the full number of employees into the system.

"We can't get any bank loans either, so we are running on empty. It's very tricky.

"Our landlords aren't giving us any rent breaks and because we are in city centre buildings, our rateable value is very high.

"It's just a total nightmare situaiton."

However, dozens of the café's supporters have stepped forward to pitch in what they can to keep the cafés in Leeds, Birmingham and Nottingham running.

"Our customers have been absolutely fantastic," said Kate. "We have got an Amazon list and people are sending us food, litter and toys. Some companies have even started sending things to us.

"We do Facebook Lives every day to give our customers their much needed cat time.

"We are running on what we have and so the kindness of our customers to try and help us to carry on caring for the cats is invalulable."
