Locals hit out at Lanarkshire greenspace being ruined by dog fouling

A popular patch of greenspace in Rutherglen is being ruined by inconsiderate dog owners letting their pets foul the area, according to locals.

Fernbrae Meadows in t he town is "consistently covered in dog mess" claim residents, who say it's turning the nature area into a "no-go zone".

Concerns have also been raised at the state of nearby Skye Road, which is also covered with waste.

The street is used by many children heading towards Cathkin Primary.

Varry Cathie, a community councillor for the area, has now appealed for locals to look after their pets and clean up when they're out and about.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "The dog fouling issue is terrible and really needs addressed now.

"I know locals are angry at dog owners not picking up after their dogs, and we know dog mess can contain diseases which are very harmful to humans.

"As well as being an issue on residential areas in Cathkin. I've been told that kids going to school in the morning have to literally dodge dog poo on Skye Road which is ridiculous.

"It takes just a couple of minutes to just pick up the mess and take it to the nearest bin.

"I'd like to personally thank all the responsible dog owners who actually do lift their dogs mess and keep the community tidy - now we need others to do the same."

Mr Cathie believes that more bins might help to make a difference, particularly around Fernbrae Meadows.

One local told us: "It's absolutely disgusting. You see people just walking ahead (of their dogs) all the time and clearly aren't bothering to pick up after them.

"There's no excuse for it, it's simply part of having a dog."

Anyone who is wanting to report a case of dog fouling can do so here, at South Lanarkshire Council's website.
