Locals devastated as Bridgend sandwich shop that’s been open for decades closes for good

A sandwich shop which has been a fixture of the community in Bridgend has closed its doors for good. People in the town have been left dismayed after Bridgend Sandwich Bar on Wyndham Street closed after 83 years in business.

The shop was established in 1940 and was owned by a man called Mr Enfield. It stood on the corner of Adare Street and Wyndham Street between Greggs and the shoe repair shop Key Shoes.

And residents say they have been left gutted at the news of its closure, which has circulated on social media. The shop declined to comment on the reasons for the closure.

One person said online: “If you look through the history of Bridgend, there’s one place that will be in all the photos - Bridgend Sandwich Bar on Adare St. Been there for decades, but no longer."

“Always joked it would survive an apocalypse. Seems that’s not the case. I’m very sad now. I get change happens. But sometimes change slams you like a brick bat.”

Bridgend resident Julie Rees told WalesOnline: “All the bus drivers used to call in for sandwiches before starting work and there were regular customers who called in on the way to the railway station. The sandwiches had to be perfect and all the bread was inspected.

“Any slices that were not perfectly square would be returned the following day. Eggs had to be sliced a certain way so when the sandwich was cut diagonally you saw equal amounts of white and yolk.

“There were so many things old Mr Enfield did. I loved my time working there."

Jenn-Elise Rawnson said: "That was my go to place when I went shopping with my friend, on our own. I would always get an egg salad sandwich with little salt packets to sprinkle in it too. I think I paid maybe £1. It could have been less back then really- good memories. I always smile as I walk past it in town. Sad to think it won't be there much longer though."

Another person added: "Been brought up on those sandwiches. Blue plastic plates stuck in my mind. That shop has been part of most people's at some point when living in Bridgend. Very sad to hear it has closed."

Recalling the pockets of time they would spend in the shop, another resident said: "Aww, been going there since my college days in the 60's for my salmon sandwiches. And up to nowadays with my daughter and grandson.

"Such a shame. Another part of good old Bridgend gone." To get Bridgend stories straight to your inbox, subscribe to our daily newsletter here.
