Local musical theatre group on hunt for new stars

A Lanarkshire drama school is looking to recruit some new stars.

Fever Pitch Academy is searching for musical theatre lovers across the region.

Several classes are held in different towns, with the most recent being the new one in Cambuslang.

Lisa McKechnie, the creative director, told Lanarkshire Live : “We’ve recently expanded to a new area which will allow more kids to access the classes.

“Already, we’ve got 18 kids from Cambuslang in the class and we’ve still got space and we only really started the new class in March.

“We don’t do auditions. We have a wide range of students who come. Some are just here for fun and for some it’s an escape from school.

"Some of the musical theatre schools have a more laid-back approach, we like to have fun.”

Several of the students went to New York in 2019 (Rutherglen Reformer)

The academy is run by a group of teachers, who teach the children singing, drama and dance.

Lisa added: “I think the last few years with everything going on with COVID, it’s affected a lot of kids’ confidence.

"When some of our kids came back you could see it had affected them.

“To be able to do shows again has just been amazing. We recently did one at Hamilton Town House and had 120 kids involved in it.

"It was amazing to be in a packed theatre again.

“Some of the kids, well their happy place is on the stage.

“In 2019, we took some of the kids to New York, they went to see Frozen on Broadway and got to do workshops with Broadway theatre actors and got to perform.

“We plan to do a trip to London this summer. We go down and do the West End experience and the kids get to perform.”

The academy are currently recruiting for their classes in Bellshill, Lanark, and Cambuslang.

Adult musical theatre classes are also available in Bellshill and more information can be found via their website.
