Local elections 2022: What you need to know in Sefton ahead of May 5

Next month will see voters flock to polling stations to vote for their local representatives.

Sefton Metropolitan Borough has 22 wards, with each ward being home to three councillors who are voted in by people living in the area. The total number of councillors elected to represent each area is 66, with one seat in every ward up for grabs with the exception of one ward.

The one ward in Sefton that is uncontested this year is St Oswald as no candidates have come forward, as a result, Carla Thomas will hold her seat. Thousands will gather at polling stations up and down the borough on May 5 as people cross the box for whoever they want to represent them.

Labour will be looking to add to their 48 seats in the borough, the most any party had held since the metropolitan borough was formed in 1974. Conservatives and Liberal Democrats both hold eight seats heading into the elections, with Formby Residents Action Group also holding two.

The count will take place throughout the night heading into Friday, May 6, with the final ward being declared in the early hours of Friday. Verification and counting will take place at Dunes Leisure Centre for Southport wards and at Aintree Racecourse for Sefton Central and South Sefton wards.
