Local creches and coffee shops forced to close as Dublin hit with massive water outage

A number of businesses in Dublin were forced to close on Tuesday following major water outages.

The outage affected a large part of south Dublin and saw thousands of residents without water all day due to a burst mains.

Rathfarnham, Rathdown, Crannagh, Terenure, Milltown, Rathgar, Ranelagh, Rathmines, Harold's Cross, and surrounding areas in Co Dublin were affected by the issue.

Irish Water said it is working to restore the water supply, and works are estimated to take place until 8pm tonight.

One of the affected businesses, Foam Coffeehouse in Terenure, was forced to close after being left with no water since 10am.

Head chef at Foam Coffeehouse, Samira Gabriela, told Dublin Live: "Unfortunately we have to close because we have no water. We can't sell coffee or food. There was no notification. We realised at 10am we had no water, so we just closed the place down. Hopefully, tomorrow we'll be back."

It follows after a local creche in Rathgar was also forced to close due to 'sanitary' reasons due to the water outage.

A local parent told Dublin Live: "We received a phone call from our creche saying we need to collect our child at 12pm today because of the water outage. Obviously, the creche can't do anything about it, but it's definitely a major disruption to our day."

Thankfully water seems to have been returned to most of the affected areas this evening.

However, Irish Water has warned that essential works due to take place on Wednesday may cause further supply disruption to Mayfield Park, Clondalkin and surrounding areas in Dublin 22.

The works are scheduled to take place from 11am until 4pm Wednesday, October 19.

Irish Water also confirmed that leak detection works would be carried out in Swords and surrounding areas on Wednesday, 19 October.

These works may cause supply disruptions to Seabury, Lissadell Wood, White Gables, The Warren, Chamley Park, Warren Manor, Estuary Road, Malahide Road R106, Swords Road R106, Dunard, Melesian Estate, St. Werburgh's, Cliffords Lane, Mountgorry Ind. Est., Foxwood, Drynam Court, Drynam Road, Barrys Park, Seamount View, Ashley Estate, Castle Grove, Oaklands Estate, Seatown Walk, Chapel Lane, Townparks, Swords and surrounding areas in Co. Dublin.

Works are scheduled to take place from 10:30am until 12:30pm on 19 October.

Irish Water said: "We recommend that you allow 2-3 hours after the estimated restoration time for your supply to fully return."
