Customers of 10 banks including Santander, Halifax, Lloyds and Nationwide report being unable to make payments this morning.
The Mirror understands the issue started when Santander's Faster Payments system crashed, which affected customers of other banks.
Thousands of customers then reported issues at multiple banks on outages website DownDetector.
The banks affected are Santander, Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds, HSBC, Barclays, Nationwide, NatWest, Monzo and Yorkshire Bank.
Bank customers report problems with transferring funds, online banking and mobile banking apps.
Some households have been unable to buy food or pay bills as a result of the issue.
Bank users started logging issues at around 6am today.
Brits took to social media to report problems with their online banking.
One Barclays customer said: "Hi I transferred money to my husband's Barclays account to pay bills and I also paid my credit card bill but neither is showing on my account."
Hi there, sorry to hear about this. We’re currently experiencing issues with making and receiving Faster Payments. We're very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing and we’re working hard to fix the problem. Other payment services are unaffected. ^EC
