Lizzie McGuire's Hilary Duff admits she is 'unemployed' after nearly 20 years off Disney

Former child star Hilary Duff admits she is "unemployed" after almost 20 years since her most popular role as Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel.

The legendary children's TV actress and singer, 35, has not appeared in a movie for four years and hasn't released a studio album since 2015.

She quickly rose to fame as a teenager playing the title role in Disney comedy Lizzie McGuire from 2001 to 2004 – also starring in a spin-off film.

Her other movie credits include roles in Agent Cody Banks, Cheaper by the Dozen and The Cinderella Story, but she has since posted about being "unemployed".

Clearly enjoying the 'jobless' life, Hilary penned the confession alongside a picture of herself enjoying what appeared to be a sun-kissed day playing tennis.

The Mirror has contacted Hilary's representatives for a comment.

Back in the 2000s, Hilary was one of the biggest names on the Disney Channel and fans were delighted when a revival was announced in 2019.

But after several delays, it was eventually revealed the following year that the reboot, set to show Lizzie living in Brooklyn, had been scrapped.

Reports at the time suggested Hilary 'pleaded with Disney' to move the show to Hulu so it wouldn’t "limit the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating".

But it appeared the network gave up on the show entirely, as the former star penned on Instagram : "Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen."

She added at the time: "I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.

"We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.

"I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align."

Hilary's last film was The Haunting of Sharon Tate in 2019, after which she won the Worst Actress category at the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards.

The mum-of-three is currently featuring in and producing the second season of American sitcom How I Met Your Father, playing the lead role of Sophie Tompkins.

It is being shown on Hulu, but the series finale was shot in front of a live audience last week, which might explain her social media post.
