Melbourne Renegades have broken an eight-game losing streak in a thrilling two-run WBBL upset win over Brisbane Heat, with skipper Hayley Matthews proving the hero in the final over.

The Heat needed six runs to win at the start of the 20th over bowled by Matthews, but the West Indies star conceded just three runs to keep Nicola Hancock (17 off nine) and Courtney Sippel quiet at Brisbane's Allan Border Field.

Earlier on Friday at the same venue, Lizelle Lee shone with the bat and the gloves to inspire Hobart Hurricanes to an eight-wicket victory over Melbourne Stars and keep her side's flickering WBBL finals hopes alive.

Matthews (46 off 28) was due a match-winning score and she delivered with her best and most influential innings of the WBBL season, which set the Renegades on the way to 7-169.

Heat opener Grace Harris (65 off 36) kept her side in the hunt before a late flurry by Jess Jonassen (17 off eight) and Hancock.

Matthews took the early wicket of Georgia Redmayne (two), and two slick catches, before her heroics in the final over to restrict the Heat to 9-167.

With the bat, Matthews played strokes all around the ground. She was looking ominous in the closing overs until bowled by seamer Hancock, who finished with her career-best figures of 4-20.

Opener Emma de Broughe (42 off 35) was classy at the top of the order and supported Matthews well.

The Renegades were 2-134 in the 16th over before Hancock and part-timer Harris (2-16) pegged them back.

The loss could be costly for the Heat who are in the third position on 14 points, two behind leaders Perth.

The opening match of the double-header belonged to the Hurricanes' former South Africa star Lee who plundered an unbeaten 77 off 49 deliveries after completing three stumpings as wicketkeeper.

After dismissing a disappointing Stars for 121 in the final over, the Hurricanes coasted to victory with 23 balls remaining at Allan Border Field.

Lee found a willing partner in allrounder Nicola Carey (38no off 41) in an unbroken 99-run stand for the third wicket.

The Hurricanes moved to nine points on the WBBL ladder, four points behind fourth-placed Sydney Thunder.

The 31-year-old Lee was in supreme form. She was dominant over, and through, the offside and was just as destructive on the legside.

Lizelle Lee
Lizelle Lee has blasted Hobart to an eight-wicket win in their WBBL clash with the Melbourne Stars.

The ball rocketed off the middle of Lee's bat throughout a knock that included four sixes.

Earlier, Stars captain Meg Lanning (27 off 19) played an array of exquisite cuts and drives in a classy cameo at the top of the order.

Melbourne's batters barely got out of first gear.

Just when they looked like doing so, they were dismissed with Maia Bouchier (23) and Annabel Sutherland (24) as prime examples.

The Hurricanes had been sloppy in the field against Brisbane two days earlier at the same venue but they bowled tightly and took their catches.

Lee was in great touch behind the stumps and set the standard in the field.

Five bowlers were among the wickets, including Carey (3-32) who had a fine match and bounced back after copping severe treatment early off Lanning.

Spinner Molly Strano (3-20) cleaned up at the end as the Stars collapsed to lose 6-22.
