Hapless PM costs us all
The curtain came down yesterday on one of the most shambolic Conservative conferences ever to have been staged.
The party charged with governing the country descended into an unruly mob as they ditched policies, settled scores and stabbed each other in the back.
The Tories’ week in Birmingham ended with a vacuous speech from Liz Truss that showed she had no answers to the pressing problems facing the country.
The Prime Minister laughably claimed the Tories were the party of sound money just days after the mini-Budget racked up billions of borrowing and sparked a run on the pound.
As a result, millions of people’s mortgages were made more expensive and the cost of servicing the government’s debt increased.
That the Government is now seeking to recover this shortfall by cutting benefits is cruel and immoral.
Ms Truss’s attack on the “anti-growth” alliance had a nasty Trumpian edge to it.
Rather than take responsibility for her government’s failure over the last 12 years to grow the economy, she is stoking division.
This was the week the Tories proved they are incompetent, amoral and unfit to govern.
Act on deaths
So far this year nine people have been killed by dangerous dogs and thousands more seriously injured.
Part of the problem is lack of enforcement by the police, prosecution service and courts.
Courts can order prison sentences of up to 14 years if someone is killed by an out-of-control dog but this penalty is rarely enforced.
The Mirror is calling for an overhaul of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Too many lives have been lost. How many more people must die before ministers act?
Oliver’s twist
Noah has replaced Oliver as the most popular name for baby boys.
In the Bible, Noah was said to live for 950 years so it is going to be around for some time.
