Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak reach final two in race to be Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss have won the final ballot of Conservative MPs to be put forward to the party membership as the potential successors to Boris Johnson. The choice now lies with Conservative party members and the result will be announced on September 5.

Mr Sunak was chancellor under the outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his resignation was one of the key events leading to his resignation. You can read his letter here. Ms Truss is foreign secretary.

Of 357 votes cast, there were two spoiled ballots. Mr Sunak got 137 votes, Ms Truss got 113 and Penny Mordaunt got 105. Ms Mordaunt tweeted after the result was announced saying: "Thanks to everyone for all your hard work. We go forward together."

The campaign to replace Mr Johnson saw 11 people throw their names in the hat.

He thanked House of Commons staff, friends and colleagues before concluding with the phrase "hasta la vista baby" - a potential nod to a return to politics.
