A week after losing her US congress seat, Liz Cheney has vowed to stand up to Donald Trump-aligned Republicans in future battles.
Ms Cheney called out Mr Trump over a “big lie” that the 2020 election had been lost illegitimately. She then lost her Wyoming seat after being usurped by a challenger loyal to the former president.
On Sunday, the former Republican big beast told ABC News that she would consider running for president at some point, possibly under the banner of a new political organisation.
She also said Kevin McCarthy, Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz, and Josh Hawley were some of the Republicans she could oppose, take to task or stand against over their support for Mr Trump’s claim.
She told the broadcaster: “I’m going to be very focused on working to ensure that we can do everything we can [to] not … elect election deniers.
“I’m going to work against those people, I’m going to work to support their opponents.”
Mr Trump has not confirmed if he will stand for office in 2024 but is currently the odds-on favourite to take the White House, with bookies offering 3/1 compared to Joe Biden at around 7/1. Odds on actor Dwayne Johnson winning are at 33/1 for some bookmakers while Ms Cheney sits, comparatively, at 100/1.
She has not confirmed if she will run in two years’ time but has said “she would run to win,” whether standing for the Republicans or for a new political outfit.
