Livingston boss David Martindale questioned his decision to leave Andrew Shinnie out of the starting line-up as the Lions fell to a 2-1 League Cup loss to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
The 32-year-old former Caley man was introduced from the bench for the final 15 minutes, by which stage the hosts were already two goals and a man down. However the versatile midfielder impressed and almost helped turn the game on its head.
Livi pulled one back on 84 minutes through Jason Holt only for the same player to miss a penalty three minutes later when he blazed over the bar.
Martindale said: "Andrew Shinnie went on and I thought he was really good. I thought his intensity and work-rate both on and off the ball was very, very good.
“I wanted to give him a wee bit of rest because he’s a bit older but maybe I got my team selection wrong there.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have rested him because he made a huge difference when he came on, in my opinion.
“But did we lose the game because of team selection? I don’t think so. We lost it through individual’s bad game management and we’ll need to deal with that.
“Those individuals will no doubt win us games this season and we’re a collective, so we all need to deal with it but I’m the manager. I need to address it, and I will.”
He added: "I thought Isma (Goncalves) had a decent first half but I need to be careful with him and James Penrice played a lot longer than I hoped.
“There’s probably only two or three coming away with pass marks after that and that’s something I need to address."
