Liverpool youngster fires superb hat-trick as strikers run riot against Wolves

Liverpool Under-21s recorded an emphatic 5-0 win over Wolves in Premier League 2 on Saturday as Layton Stewart struck a hat-trick.

The Reds had far too much firepower for the visitors with Stewart’s replacement, Oakley Cannonier, also grabbing two for himself.

It completes an excellent week for Barry Lewtas after his U19s team won 4-1 against Rangers in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday.

Mateusz Musialowski thought he’d done enough to open the scoring early on but after knocking the ball over goalkeeper Andreas Sondergaard, it was cleared off the line brilliantly by Oliver Tipton.

Sondergaard then made a smart save to deny Melkamu Frauendorf’s low strike near at the half-hour mark.

Stewart was thwarted in the second half by the goalkeeper after excellent work from Musialowski, who had moved over to the right after Luke Chambers was brought on for Frauendorf.

But there was nothing Sondergaard could do moments later when the forward clinically dispatched for his second after a fine assist from Dominic Corness.

Stewart saved the best for last though when he pounced on a poor clearance from the goalkeeper to stroke home from all of 40 yards to bring up the hat-trick. The No.9 left to huge applause moments later when he was replaced by Cannonier.

The Leeds-born striker didn’t take long to make his mark, either. After Chambers had won the ball back with a superb tackle Cannonier smashed one into the net from about 25 yards.

The substitute then added a second late on as the Reds registered their ninth goal of the week.

With the game secure 16-year-old Ben Doak was introduced for his Under-21 debut as Musialowski made way. The young Scot was a menace to Wolves’ overworked defence during his cameo and fired wide as Liverpool chased a sixth.

Doak’s well-weighted pass then played in Cannonier on the counter for a hat-trick of his own in the final seconds but his lifted finish was saved.
