Liverpool will HATE Rangers Champions League draw claims Chris Sutton as he points to humiliation factor

It may have been a dream draw for Rangers in the Champions League, but Christ Sutton reckons Liverpool will HATE having to go up against the Gers.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst guided his team to the group stage for the first time in over a decade with a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. And their reward was a star studded group alongside last season’s finalists, Napoli and Calvin Basey’s Ajax.

The Anfield club will be the favourites to win the group, but second is up for grabs. Rangers showed last season they can mix it with some of Europe’s best in their run to the Europa League final in Seville. The’ve now stepped it up a level and are in with the real big boys on the continent. And Sutton believes Liverpool and their English rivals are in a no-win situation when they come up against Glasgow’s big two.

He pointed to Rangers’ Battle of Britain clash with Leeds United in the early 90s as an example. The Light Blues eliminated the Elland Road club, while Celtic have previously beaten Liverpool in the UEFA Cup and Manchester United in the Champions League.

And Sutton insists the potential for humiliation is why the English big guns would rather avoid the Old Firm on such occasions. He told BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra: “I think Liverpool will hate drawing Rangers. I do. It's everything to lose for them. Ally (McCoist) played against Leeds in that draw years ago and they knocked them out.

“The English clubs do not like drawing the Scottish clubs because of the sheer humiliation factor. And Rangers will absolutely not fear anyone, especially at Ibrox. Liverpool haven’t started the season well so there’s no reason why Rangers cannot take the scalp of Liverpool.”
