Liverpool weather remains cold with frost and ice expected, say Met Office

Merseyside is set to face more cold weather today and over the weekend, with wintry showers expected.

The Met Office has predicted a mostly dry day for Liverpool on Friday, April 8, on a day when racegoers will enjoy Ladies Day at Aintree racecourse. While the weather will give us sunny spells it will still be cold and windy.

Some scattered showers could hit the region, with these being wintry at times with hail and sleet. However it's set to be better weather than yesterday at least. There will be high temperatures of 11C.

Any showers will stop in the evening with largely clear skies predicted. Overnight temperatures will drop leading to a widespread frost, with a minimum temperature -1C. Saturday, Grand National Day, will be very similar to today, with few scattered showers , with sunny spells but still a cold breeze.

Temperatures will hit highs of only 9C on Saturday with a chilly and frosty start on both days over the weekend.

The forecast is much the same across the country, with other regions expected to have lows of -5 with more wintry showers expected. The Met Office said: "Wintry showers overnight and early Friday may lead to some difficult driving conditions and travel disruption."

While BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes said: "We’ve got showers mainly affecting northern areas particularly in Scotland where some are falling as snow particularly over the high ground, bringing a risk icy stretches and a widespread frost as well. So it’s a cold start as we head into the first part of Friday morning."

Fawkes added: "A lot of us will start the day with some sunshine, cold and frosty first thing in the morning. There will be widespread showers and thunderstorms that then move in across Scotland and Northern Ireland through the morning and across into northern England and North Wales. The showers really widespread across these areas, they will have hail and they will have thunder mixed in."
