Liverpool vs West Ham LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after Virgil van Dijk winner

Liverpool vs West Ham LIVE

After Arsenal dropped points against Brentford on Saturday, Liverpool took a big step towards securing the Premier League title by beating West Ham. Arne Slot’s side are now 13 points clear at the top and need just two wins from their remaining six matches to be crowned champions.

Liverpool had already beaten West Ham twice this season - 5-1 in the Carabao Cup and 5-0 in the Premier League - and got back to winning ways after their defeat at Fulham last weekend as Virgil van Dijk scored a late header on a nervy afternoon at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah started at Anfield fresh from signing his new contract but could not end his run of four games without a goal. Liverpool could now wrap up the title next weekend if Arsenal lose to Ipswich and they beat Leicester. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog.

Slot was also asked about the possibility of Virgil van Dijk following Mohamed Salah in signing a new contract.

There is a feeling a new deal for Van Dijk could be announced next.

Slot said: “The good news is that both of them are available to play. It would be weird and strange if I think about contract situations in this moment.

“I am happy that Mo extended but my full focus is on West Ham. They beat Arsenal away from home so it is a challenge for us today.”

Slot explains Robertson and Szoboszlai decisions

13:43 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot has just been speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game and the Liverpool boss was asked about his decisions to drop Andy Robertson and Dominik Szoboszlai to the bench.

Asked if his decisions were a response to last weekend’s 3-2 defeat at Fulham, Slot said: “It would be a bit weird if you only think about one game.

“Curtis [Jones]has done well and today, with what we expect in this game, I chose Curtis for this game. And Kostas [Tsimikas] gets his chance as well.”

Liverpool to mark 36th anniversary of Hillsborough tragedy

13:35 , Giuseppe Muro

Liverpool will today mark the 36th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Respects will be paid to the 97 supporters who lost their lives at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989.

A mosaic will also be displayed on the Kop and there will be a period of silence prior to kick-off.

13:27 , Giuseppe Muro

Conor Bradley has been speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game and admits it has been a frustrating season for him personally due to injuries.

Bradley makes his first start since the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park in February.

“It has been difficult,” he said. “It has been a frustrating season for me with injuries but I am happy to be back and hopefully I can do well today.

“We want to finish the season as strong as we can.”

13:19 , Giuseppe Muro

Teenager Ollie Scarles starts at left-back for West Ham and faces one of the toughest challenges in world football - keeping Mohamed Salah quiet.

Scarles has started only six matches for West Ham but boss Graham Potter believes the 19-year-old is up to the challenge at Anfield.

"He's done really well," said Potter. "He's a young player who has come through the academy which is important for us.

"He has a great attitude and is going to get better and better with the game time he has.

"But at the same time we have to perform as a team, we have to play well and get points. We're not a development club, we're a team in the Premier League which has demands to win.

"But nevertheless he's contributed to some good results and he will improve as time goes on."

Liverpool vs West Ham stats

Salah backed to have ‘big impact’ after new contract

12:29 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot admits there is very little room for improvement in Mohamed Salah but he is confident the Liverpool star will continue to have a big impact.

Salah's 32-goal return this season is surpassed only by his record-breaking maiden campaign of 2017-18 and his next league goal will see him overtake Sergio Aguero into fifth place on the all-time list of Premier League goalscorers on 185 - with Harry Kane, in second, currently only 29 ahead.

"We are always trying to achieve a bit more as a team and individuals but if you are playing at Liverpool, probably you are close to coming to the maximum of your ability," said Slot.

"There is not a lot of room for improvement for Mo and the other players. It's clear that Mo is coming close to the end, not the end of his career but to the end of his ability.

"I think we've brought almost the maximum out of his qualities this season and then it's about consistency, which is one of the most difficult things in football.

"That is why he has been seen as such a star player."

Slot: Salah contract shows how ambitious Liverpool are

12:12 , Giuseppe Muro

The big news from Liverpool this week was of course Mohamed Salah signing a new contract.

Arne Slot welcomed the positive message the contract extension sent out in terms of the club's ambitions.

The long-running saga over the Egypt international's future was finally ended with the announcement the 33-year-old, whose deal was due to expire in the summer, had committed himself to the Premier League champions-elect for another two years.

Salah said he signed "because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football".

The forward added: "I said in the beginning of the season, I just want to win the Premier League more than anything else. I want it so bad, to be fair."

Sporting director Richard Hughes has spent a large amount of his time working on the negotiations, in addition to those involving Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold who are also in their final three months.

But Slot admits it also required the financial backing of owners Fenway Sports Group to get it over the line after deviating from their policy of not handing players over 30 lucrative new contracts, with a cut in the forward's reported £350,000-a-week wages never on the agenda in discussions.

"First of all, it's Mo's choice and his agent's choice and what he wants. Second of all, the club; FSG, Richard, Michael Edwards (FSG's football chief executive) put a lot of effort to influence that," said Slot.

"Effort mostly means money - but also effort, not only money.

"It gives a positive vibe to the club, maybe a positive vibe we might not need but it's always good to have positive vibes instead of negative vibes.

"If you want to sign new players or players who want to extend here, it is always a positive to see one of our star players over the last seven or eight years has made the choice to extend his contract.

"It also shows maybe how ambitious this club is: not only Mo, but the owners. We are really ambitious to keep performing the way this club has performed for so many years."

Prediction

11:57 , Giuseppe Muro

Arne Slot will have ripped into his players during the week after seeing his side lose away in the Premier League for the first time in his tenure, and West Ham could prove generous guests.

The Hammers continue to be leaky at the back and Mohamed Salah, now a staggering two games without a goal, will be desperate to get back into his stride. Liverpool should win and take another step towards the title.

Liverpool to win, 3-0.

West Ham team news

Niclas Fullkrug could start his first game since January after scoring as a substitute in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

“Niclas Fullkrug has had a bit of - not fatigue - but we’re just making sure he’s OK after last weekend,” said Graham Potter on Friday.

“He trained with the team today, so hopefully there’s no reaction to that and he’ll be in the squad at the weekend.”

Michail Antonio and Crysencio Summerville are long-term injury absentees.
