Liverpool vs PSG LIVE: Champions League latest score and goal updates from blockbuster second leg at Anfield

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain meet again with the Reds taking a 1-0 lead back to Anfield for tonight’s Champions League last-16 second leg.

A classic smash-and-grab from the Premier League leaders, made possible by an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott’s late winner, means Arne Slot’s side will progress to the quarter-finals as long as they avoid defeat to the French champions.

But Luis Enrique’s team dominated the first leg in Paris and Liverpool know they cannot rely on Alisson’s saves alone against a hugely dangerous opponent, with winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia set to carry more of his threatening menace in PSG’s attack.

Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield in 19 games, having taken another step closer to the Premier League title with a 3-1 win over Southampton at the weekend. The Reds also have Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle to consider - but for now all their focus is on PSG.

Another record on the cards for Mo Salah

19:45 , Arthur Ferridge

Another day, another record equalled. It must get boring at some point.

Having been named in tonight’s starting XI, Opta report that Mohammed Salah will move level with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s second-most experienced Champions League player, with 73 appearances.

Only Jamie Carragher (80) has more.

Should Liverpool reach the final and Salah appear in every match, the Egyptian King will finish the season with 78. Might need one more season to cement that record!

'PSG need a historic Champions League night at Anfield'

19:43 , Richard Jolly

Liverpool have won an away first leg 39 times in Europe and gone through at Anfield on all 39 occasions so Paris Saint-Germain have to make history tonight if they are to be quarter-finalists. They have picked the same team as last week, hoping for the same performance and a different result. Liverpool are looking for the same team to produce the same result, but preferably with a different performance.

A concerning pattern for Andy Robertson

19:41 , Arthur Ferridge

The increasing use of statistics and data in football has proven controversial in recent years, but sometimes the numbers simply do not lie. But make up your own mind how much stock you are putting into this one...

Andy Robertson today turns 31, and celebrates the moment with a Champions League start at Anfield. All well and good. Right?

Maybe not. Robertson has twice appeared for Liverpool, and has never won. The last two appearances came against Atletico Madrid in 2020 (2-3) and Bournemouth in 2023 (0-1).

If there was ever a night to buck the trend, it should be today.

Allez les who?

19:29

‘Allex Les Rouges.’

So reads the hand-drawn cover of tonight’s match programme.

Prominently featured is a wall displaying photos of those French Liverpool players, including Ibrahima Konate, Mamadou Sakho, and Djibril Cisse, all alongside a glimmering Champions League trophy, which, incidentally, PSG have never won.

All situated in a Louvre-like gallery, the piece is packed full of pointed references to Liverpool’s record over French sides - not likely to be a souvenir the away support will treasure.

Can Khvicha Kvaratskhelia have the required impact?

19:20 , Arthur Ferridge

Georgia’s finest sporting export, nicknamed Kvaradonna, has not quite hit the ground running since moving to PSG in January. He has made seven league appearances since completing the €80 million transfer, scoring just once, but has had more success in European competition.

Kvaratskhelia already has one goal and one assist in three Champions League appearances, outstripping his league tally in half the game time.

Four shots on target were not enough for him to produce a goal in the reverse fixture, and the chances he created all came to nought.

He will need to be on top form tonight if PSG are to turn this tie around.

Slot hints at his tactics ahead of kickoff

19:11 , Arthur Ferridge

Arne Slot suggests his Liverpool side may again rely on the same long-ball strategy which helped them win last week.

Liverpool were pinned back for long stretches in the first leg, resorting to route one passing as they struggled to play out. That is eventually how Harvey Elliott scored.

Here’s what Slot had to say about it: “If you play ten long balls, probably won’t be ten times you end up in front of the goalkeeper but that one time it changes the game.”

He was also asked whether Cody Gakpo was close to starting, saying: “Not close at all, he only played yesterday. It was the first time he trained in nearly three weeks. The players know you cannot train once after three or four weeks out and go to the intensity levels of a game like this.”

SUBS: Harvey Elliott returns to the bench

19:03 , Arthur Ferridge

Bad news for PSG - Harvey Elliott is back on the bench for Liverpool. Will he come back to haunt the French contingent with another late goal?

Here are the substitutes in full:

Liverpool: Jaros, Kelleher, Endo, Nunez, Chiesa, Gakpo, Elliott, Tsimikas, McConnell, Quansah

PSG: Safonov, Tenas, Kimpembe, Ramos, Doue, Lee, Hernandez, Mayulu, Zaire-Emery, Beraldo, Mbaye

Do PSG have a good record against Liverpool?

18:59 , Arthur Ferridge

Tonight will be just the sixth meeting between Liverpool and PSG, and the scores are remarkably even.

Liverpool boast three wins in the tie, PSG have two. Both sides have scored seven goals against one another.

Most notably, though, PSG have never won at Anfield in two attempts, losing 2-0 in the 1996/97 Cup Winners Cup and 3-2 in the 2018/19 group stages.

Will that record change tonight? All will be revealed...

What happened in the first leg?

18:51 , Arthur Ferridge

The reverse fixture at the Parc de Princes was a comic affair which will live long in the memory.

PSG dominated the match, something made clear both in the stats and in the viewing, but, fatally, failed to score.

At full time, the hosts boasted 71% possession, 27 shots to Liverpool’s 2, and 693 passes to the visitors’ 295.

Only one number truly matters, though: the scoreline. And that read 0-1 to Liverpool thanks to Harvey Elliot’s 87th minute smash-and-grab winner.

The Reds laughed all the way back to Merseyside, but PSG will arrive at Anfield with a point to prove and a grudge to hold.

Confirmed team news: No surprises as Slot and Enrique name sides

18:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Both Luis Enrique and Arne Slot seem to recognize just how tight this tie will be, naming full-strength squads. Here’s how both teams line up:

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Diaz

PSG XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Ruiz, Neves; Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Barcola

What does the next round hold?

18:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Everything is to play for tonight, as Liverpool carry a slim one-goal advantage in the aggregate scoreline. But where does the winner head next?

Opposite PSG and Liverpool on the bracket are Aston Villa and Club Brugges, who play their own second leg tomorrow night in Birmingham.

Villa currently lead the tie 3-1, meaning an all-Premier League tie in the quarter-finals is narrowly the most likely outcome.

PSG team news: No changes for the visitors

18:29 , Arthur Ferridge

PSG’s 22-man travelling squad for tonight’s fixture on Merseyside is identical to that which they named for the reverse leg.

They did, however, rotate heavily for last weekend’s Ligue 1 match against Rennes, a 1-4 away win. The players rested include Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembélé, and Kvicha Kvaratshkelia.

Soeaking pre-match, PSG manager Luis Enrique hinted he would not be likely to gamble: “I don't think that Arne Slot has much doubt about our starting XI for tomorrow.”

Kvaratskhelia on facing Liverpool at Anfield and why it's '50/50'

18:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia impressed in last week’s first leg and by the sounds of it, the languid winger will not be intimidated by facing Liverpool at Anfield tonight.

"When you play at Anfield against Liverpool you don't need to motivate yourself that much, you already have it inside you," he said.

"We have big mentality in the team and we will just try to win tomorrow, that is our mentality.

"The game will be 50-50, we just have to concentrate on our game, be confident and show them we are here just to win.

"I think it will be the most important game in our season because our goal is to play in the Champions League many times and play in the final."

Liverpool team news: Gakpo returns for the Reds

18:09 , Arthur Ferridge

Cody Gakpo was absent for Liverpool in the first leg at the Parc de Princes due to an ankle issue, but has returned to training and is available for selection tonight.

Chances were few and far between for Liverpool last time out, and the Dutchman’s clinical edge will be vital if they are to see this result over the line.

There are other players missing, though. Star full back Conor Bradley, centre-back Joe Gomez, and youngster Tyler Morton all remain injured.

Discipline will also be an issue - should any of Harvey Elliott, Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister, Andy Robertson, or Virgil van Dijk be booked tonight, they will face a one match ban.

The PSG wildcard that can hurt Liverpool and transform Champions League tie

18:05 , Miguel Delaney

Luis Enrique often says things that other managers just wouldn’t, and there was another after Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Emboldened by his team’s performance, but frustrated by a “very unfair” result, the Spanish manager just went for it. He had of course been asked about the prospect of a comeback at Anfield.

“Of course we can do it,” Luis Enrique responded, before checking himself and going stronger. “We’re gonna do it.”

Not can. Going to.

The PSG wildcard that can hurt Liverpool and transform tie

Luis Enrique: 'Our only option is to go out and win'

17:50 , Jamie Braidwood

The Paris Saint-Germain manager believes his team is capable of coming to “historic” Anfield and achieving a Champions League comeback.

"At the moment we are out so our only option is to go out and win and that is what is driving us,” he said. “I don't think Arne Slot has much doubts about our starting XI, I've got my ideas about his starting XI as well.

"I'm not going to give away who we are going to play or how we are going to play but over the course of two games we will see two of the best teams in Europe, two contenders for the final and whoever goes through will go through to the final."

The untold story behind Liverpool and PSG’s two scorelines

17:35 , Richard Jolly

Arne Slot did not allow himself to dream. In fact, he had a sleepless night. By choice, too. One of his finest results as Liverpool manager nevertheless prompted a late-night inquest of sorts.

“If you have a game like we did last week, you feel like, ‘Can I even go to sleep at all? Or do I have to watch even more?’” he admitted.

Slot’s video analysis of Paris Saint-Germain has been extensive, aided by a rare free weekend before last Wednesday’s 1-0 win in the Parc des Princes, even incorporating their autumn defeats to Arsenal and Bayern Munich. But fresh from adding the French champions to their English, German and Spanish counterparts on the list of Liverpool’s victims this season, Slot felt the immediate need to revisit the game.

Two scorelines told wildly different tales: 1-0 to Liverpool, courtesy of Harvey Elliott’s first touch in the French capital, and 27-2, the shot count, dominated by PSG.

Arne Slot: 'PSG are the most complete team we have faced'

17:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Arne Slot praised Paris Saint-Germain as the “most complete” team Liverpool have played this season but said he wants his players to take a more proactive approach in the second leg tonight.

“This is the most complete team we have faced so far,” Slot told a press conference. “We have faced Arsenal and Manchester City and they are not big margins but the intensity they (PSG) play at combined with the quality - and they are one of the richest clubs - and a great manager it is not easy to play against.

"Is there a difference (leading 1-0)? No. We try to play every game to try to win. That is also what we tried to do last week, it wasn't our intention to be so low (deep) all the time. We want to play a different game, the intention is always the same - we are not going to go for a draw.”
