Liverpool are out of the Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain overturned a first-leg defeat and held their nerve to win on penalties at Anfield.
The Reds suffered their first major blow under Arne Slot as Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones saw their efforts saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and PSG scored all of theirs.
Luis Enrique’s team won 1-0 on the night as Ousmane Dembele cancelled out Harvey Elliott’s late winner in the Parc des Princes last week.
Dembele levelled the tie after just 11 minutes and, despite a bright start from Liverpool, it gave PSG the momentum to dominate the first half.
Liverpool were the better team after the break but could not make the most of their superiority and PSG survived long spells of pressure to reach extra time.
And Liverpool are facing a defensive injury crisis before Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate were forced off.

Liverpool face injury crisis before Carabao Cup final
23:54 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool are facing a defensive injury crisis before Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate were forced off during the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Alexander-Arnold looked to suffer a suspected ankle injury before Konate was substituted in extra time and limped off. Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley are currently unavailable due to injuries, which could leave Liverpool fielding Wataru Endo as a makeshift option at centre-back and Jarell Quansah at right back.
Arne Slot said Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to be fit for the Carabao Cup final after the right back appeared to twist his ankle when sliding into a challenge on PSG’s Vitinha on the touchline, but the head coach said Konate may be available as the France international was fatigued with the Champions League tie entering extra time.
“I have to ask but for me Ibou was tired [rather] than an injury but Trent had to come off,” Slot said after Liverpool’s defeat on penalties. “That is never a good sign and from people who saw it, it didn’t look good so I would be surprised if he is available on Sunday.”

Alexander-Arnold and Konate update ahead of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final
Without the superstars, Luis Enrique has achieved the impossible at PSG
23:36 , Richard JollyIt was not Luis Enrique’s greatest remontada. But then, how could it be? Not after he once conjured a 6-1 win to overturn a Champions League deficit. That involved Paris Saint-Germain, too. But, eight years on from a seminal night for Barcelona came a superb one for his victims then.
The round of 16 can be the round of PSG; or the round they depart the Champions League, anyway. Not this time.
On 39 previous occasions, Liverpool had won the away leg of a European tie before a rematch at Anfield. On all 39 they had gone through. Not at the 40th time of asking, however. PSG won at Anfield; over 90 and then 120 minutes, over seven penalties.

Without the superstars, Luis Enrique has achieved the impossible at PSG
Liverpool are out of the Champions League but the worst could be yet to come
23:23 , Arthur FerridgeA treble evaporates for Liverpool, and a double may yet go with it. This penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain after a 1-0 loss didn’t just cost them a place in the Champions League quarter-final, but also a series of defenders for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle. Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold are now in doubt, in developments that may end up the most significant of the night.
Liverpool have to quickly pick themselves up, after a deflating elimination that currently feels like the first time they are faltering under Arne Slot.

Andy Robertson cracks a smile post match
23:19 , Arthur FerridgeIt was with a typically pragmatic eye that Andy Robertson addressed tonight’s action.
On the night’s performance: “That’s the competition. We got the win last week without playing our best but that’s football. You can’t question the effort, the endeavour, penalties are a lottery and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it. It is just a shame the efforts weren’t rewarded.”
On the loss: “We didn’t take our chances. We kept pushing and pushing but could not quite get level on the night. We have a lot to look at on and a lot of positives but its a massive disappointment.”
On the League Cup final: “For finishing top of the group we got the toughest tie of the knockout. We believed we could get through if luck was on our side, but it wasn’t meant to be and we need to dust ourselves down ahead of a cup final on Sunday and a Premier League title push.”
Enrique: Both teams deserve to go to the next phase
23:14Enrique was humble in victory. Here is his assessment of the match:
On the result: “That is not important. Both of the teams deserve to go to the next phase. In Paris they play better than us, I think my team show in a special stadium great personality, great character. We try to play our best but it was very difficult because they are so intense and the atmosphere was great. both teams deserve to go through.”
Best European match you have seen? “There are some special matches. When the draw told about the match against Liverpool and PSG both managers told the same. One of the best matches that you can watch in Europe and I think both teams were great.”
On why PSG won: “That is nothing to do with consistency. In two matches if you do a bad match you can be eliminated. It is not about consistency, you have to be great in specific moments. We suffer a lot in the first match, but football is that way. Today we were lucky in some moments because they hit the post a few times. In the end football is going to take something but give you something. We are happy and confident to go to the next phase. It is a good moment for us and our fans.”
Slot: "The greatest game I have ever seen."
23:07 , Arthur FerridgeArne Slot was clearly disappointed to have gone out, but admitted his team were well beaten. Here’s his reaction:
Best game I have seen: “I think it was the best game of football I was ever involved in. Incredible performance especially if you compare with last week. The first 25 minutes we were just all over them, created chance after chance and then all of a sudden we were 1-0 down. We ran out of luck after last week because the margins were so short tonight.”
On the reaction: “Now everybody should be disappointed. I know these players, the resilience they showed, last week was so difficult and to go out here today with the fans who were incredible, it had everything you want to see from a football game. From our perspective we would have hoped to have a draw after 90.”
Are PSG favourites going forward? “I wouldn’t say [PSG] are favourites. you know how much I like this team. It is not easy to play over here and in these circumstances but they were able to get the win over the line. It is a very good team but the#re are very good teams everywhere in this tournament. Normally you face these teams in the final but we had to face PSG, one of the richest clubs in the world at this early round.”
Van Dijk reacts: We are out on penalties and that is the reality
22:57 , Arthur FerridgeThe disappointment was unsurprisingly palpable as Liverpool captain Van Dijk spoke post-match. Here is his assessment of the match.
On today’s performance: “I think we were pretty good today. Obviously you want to go as far as possible and when the draw came and we saw PSG we knew it would be very difficult. We saw that in Paris when we struggled but won. Today we saw a much better Liverpool side but lost and that is the reality.”
On playing next year’s Champions League: “The Champions League is a great competition, we always look forward to it.”
Looking ahead to the League Cup final: “We would play with the same intensity and quality on Sunday as we did in regular time [today]. It will be a beautiful game. The focus now is on recovery because we have to be at our best against a very good Newcastle side.”
FT: Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg) (1-4 pens)
22:44 , Arthur FerridgeDésiré Doué finishes it for PSG, and the Parisans go through!
They have won it in front of the away end, and there are euphoric scenes in the stands as pyros are lit and supporters celebrate.
There is, though, despondence among those in red. Nunez looks mournful in the background as Luis Enrique blows a kiss to the camera and hugs his goalkeeper.
A European classic, to be sure. This one will live long in the memory.

CURTIS JONES MISSES: Liverpool 1-3 PSG
22:42 , Arthur FerridgeIt is homegrown talent Curtis Jones next. He will have grown up dreaming of taking a Champions League penalty for Liverpool.
But this one is a nightmare. Donnarumma saves again.
Liverpool are down and out. Score to win for PSG.

Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 1-3 PSG
22:41 , Arthur FerridgeDembele caps a fine performance with an emphatic penalty in the top right corner.
No keeper is saving that.
NUNEZ MISSES: Liverpool 1-2 PSG
22:40 , Arthur FerridgeUp next for the Reds is Darwin Nunez, better known for his misses than for his goals.
And he adds another to the collection. His pen is not close enough to the corner and Donnarumma saves easily.
Advantage PSG!

Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 1-2 PSG
22:39 , Arthur FerridgeGoncalo Ramos was brought on in the 120th minute to take a penalty, and has never missed a penalty in his career.
No pressure then, eh?
He scores.
Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 1-1 PSG
22:38 , Arthur FerridgeWho else but Mo Salah to take first for Liverpool?
Of course, he scores. Donnarumma doesn’t even move. Honours even.
Penalty Shootout: Liverpool 0-1 PSG
22:37 , Arthur FerridgeVitinha has had a fantastic game in the middle of the park and is elected to take the first penalty of the evening.
He takes a deep breath and a walking runup before rolling his pen into the bottom right. Allison gets a hand to it but not quite enough.
What a bizarre penalty.
Penalty shootout
22:35 , Arthur FerridgeDonnarumma has already made himself the main character tonight, but his opposite number may be the one making the difference here.
Allison Becker has saved three of the last eight penalties he has faced for Liverpool.
PSG will take first in the shootout.
FT - Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:33 , Arthur FerridgePenalties it is!
Nothing to separate the sides after that last half an hour, and we go to the dreaded penalty shootout.
Liverpool, incidentally, have never lost a shootout in European competition.
But hey, first time for everything, right?
PENALTIES! Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:32 , Richard JollyLiverpool have lost two penalty takers with Alexander-Arnold and Mac Allister going off. This guess is their five takers are Salah, Gakpo, Nunez, Jones and Van Dijk.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:31 , Arthur Ferridge120mins: Both sides look to be out of ideas as Nuno Mendes sends a speculative shot goalwards.
1 minute is added, and Luis Enrique adds Goncalo Ramos to the mix, presumably with the intention of having him take a penalty.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:28 , Arthur Ferridge118mins: Penalties are just around the corner now...
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:26 , Arthur Ferridge115mins: Salah goes down in the box under minimal contact but the referee immediately wags a finger in his direction.
PSG whip straight down the other end on the counter but Lee’s shot is an easy save for Allison.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:24 , Arthur Ferridge113mins: Zaire-Emery cuts in off the right wing, sends Darwin Nunez for chips, and whips a curling shot goalwards. Once again it is just slightly wide of the far post.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:22 , Arthur Ferridge111mins: Konate hobbles off and his place is taken by Wataru Endo.
Konate makes a point of egging on the crowd as he limps back to the bench. The 12th man plays a crucial role at this stage.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:20 , Arthur Ferridge109mins: Dembele looks incredibly frustrated as his snap shot is saved.
Konate is down injured, though, and PSG’s corner is delayed.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:19 , Arthur Ferridge107mins: Just to point out that Liverpool still have one more substitution to make, while PSG still have two.
There is certainly a tactical battle to be won or lost as the clock runs down.
HALF TIME EXTRA TIME: Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:16 , Arthur FerridgeThat does it for the first quarter of an hour - still nothing to separate the two sides.
With 105 minutes of football now played, both sides look exhausted. This could well be separated by a single mistake - a missed pass, a poorly timed tackle, a dropped parry.
Fifteen more minutes to fight, then penalties!
Liverpool make another change, adding Harvey Elliott for Szoboszlai. To say the Hungary international looks spent would be an understatement. A penny to know how much ground that man covered tonight.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:13 , Arthur Ferridge105mins: An awkward slip for Nuno Mendes, and the player looks to be in some discomfort.
It looks to be a similar incident to that which took Alexander-Arnold out of the game - an innocuous stumble and awkward tumble.
The player hobbles off with PSG’s trainers while Liverpool take a corner, but Donnarumma deals with it over Van Dijk.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:10 , Arthur Ferridge101mins: Both sides make changes.
PSG exchange Kvaratskhelia for Lee. The Georgian has struggled to get on the ball but looked dangerous when he has, ultimately failing to score though.
Cody Gakpo returns from injury to replace Luis Diaz. Having been sidelined for a couple of weeks, this is an intense return.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:0597mins: Another Liverpool corner, another uncompromising Donnarumma parry.
He flies off his line and bats the cross out. Not taking any chances.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
22:00 , Arthur Ferridge93min: Vitinha plays a gorgeous cross in to Beraldo, whose header, again, is inches from goal.
Doue goes close again moments later.

EXTRA TIME: Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:57 , Arthur Ferridge90mins: We are back underway. Two 15-minute halves await.
Both sides have smartly waited to use most of their substitutions, leaving three each to extra time.
Zaire-Emery comes on for PSG, Curtis Jones comes on for Liverpool.
All to play for now, this is a classic in the making.
FULL TIME: Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:54 , Arthur FerridgeAnother half hour? Oh, go on then.
PSG take the win in normal time, but a 1-1 aggregate score means we will see another 30 minutes of play as the two sides look to separate themselves.
The half was defined by missed chances - either side has chances aplenty to take the lead, particularly Liverpool, but a dominant performance from Donnarumme means we go to extra time.
Stay tuned!
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:54Extra time!
PSG had the better of the first half, Liverpool the better of the second. PSG have become just the fifth team to beat Slot's Liverpool over 90 minutes but, like one of the others, it may not count for much: Tottenham won the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, but not the second or the tie.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:50 , Arthur Ferridge90+3mins: The free kick comes to nought. A huge opportunity squandered for PSG in a half where opportunities have been few and far between.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:49 , Arthur Ferridge90+2mins: Dembele is fouled by Mac Allister on the break. A dangerous free kick for PSG on the edge of the box awaits.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:48 , Arthur Ferridge90min: Five minutes are added.
Liverpool will not want to play extra time here as they have the small matter of the League Cup final to look forward to on Sunday.
It goes without saying that 120 minutes of Champions League football is suboptimal preparation for a cup final.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:44 , Arthur Ferridge87min: Donnarumma is incensed with his defence as he claims yet another cross. He has been almost single-handedly keeping PSG in this game over the last 10 minutes or so.
The visitors can barely get out of their own half of late.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:42 , Arthur Ferridge84min: Liverpool huff and puff but just cannot seem to blow PSG down. They are throwing the kitchen sink at it but the final piece of the puzzle is still lacking.
It can’t be far away now.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:41 , Richard Jolly83 mins: The first leg was decided by a substitute, in Harvey Elliott. The second may come down to another replacement. PSG made the first move, bringing on Desire Doue. Darwin Nunez is on for the disappointing Diogo Jota. And with Trent Alexander-Arnold down, Jarell Quansah is on: he is perhaps Liverpool's fourth choice at right-back but Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are both injured.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:37 , Arthur Ferridge78mins: How on Earth has that stayed out?!
A cracking set piece from Robertson is headed goalwards by Quansah, who hits the inside of the post and dribbles out along the goalline.
No rebound comes in but the offside flag is up anyway, so no matter.
With just over ten minutes remaining in the half... did somebody say extra time and penalties?
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:31 , Arthur Ferridge73mins: Jarrell Quansah and Darwin Nunez enter the fray in place of Trent Alexander Arnold and Diogo Jota.
Hopefully that is not as serious an injury as it looks for Trent.
A difficult night for Jota, also, whose frustration was visible before he was hooked following a string of wayward shots and aimless dribbles.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge70min: Trent misses a tackle, lands awkwardly, and spins into the advertising hoardings.
He looks intrinsically uncomfortable as he drags himself back onto the pitch to receive treatment.
It was one of those landings that makes you wince when you see the slow-motion replay, which does not bode well for the player.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:24 , Arthur Ferridge66min: Another penalty shout for Liverpool as Salah is tripped at the corner of the box, but the referee is again having none of it.
Replays seem to show a clumsy tackle from Mendes, but the contact looks to be outside the box and, as such, the VAR cannot intervene.
PSG make the first sub as Barcola is replaced by Doue.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:23 , Arthur Ferridge65min: Donnarumma goes down injured and receives treatment briefly before spritely hopping back to his feet to continue.
He gets whole-hearted boos from the Liverpool support when he takes his next touch of the ball - they clearly suspect a bit of timewasting.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:20 , Arthur Ferridge63min: Another block to deny Liverpool!
Donnarumma clears a corner which falls to Salah and his shot is a near-certain goal before Kvaratskhelia stretches to keep it out.
Half an hour to play now - Liverpool need to take one of these chances soon.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:17 , Arthur Ferridge60min: Vitinha is down receiving treatment after knocking heads with Salah - he looks to have split an eyebrow.
He is all patched up and free to continue, though.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:15 , Arthur Ferridge57min: Another Szoboszlai shot, another smart block, this time from Pacho.
A corner follows, which Van Dijk heads goalward only to be denied by Donnarumma.
All Liverpool the last few minutes.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:13 , Arthur Ferridge56min: It appears Darwin Nunez is being readied to come on as the camera pans to him receiving instructions from a coach in the dugout.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:12 , Arthur Ferridge54min: Szoboslai has it in the back of the net after a chaotic sequence but the flag is up for offside.
The assistant referee let that play run for close to a minute before raising his flag.
Liverpool seem newly reinvigorated alongside the support. The momentum has swung like a pendulum - its all the hosts now.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:09 , Arthur Ferridge50min: We are yet to have a clear cut chance in the second half, but PSG are certainly looking the more lively side.
Vitinha exemplifies that with a mazy dribble through the middle of the pitch to set PSG on an attack which ultimately comes to nought, but the potential is clear.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:09 , Richard JollyPresume it is part of the gameplan tonight but it is noticeable that Ibrahima Konate has run the ball out from the back quite a few times. Quite well, too. It always used to be Joel Matip who was the Liverpool defender who would surge forward in possession.
2ND HALF - Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
21:03 , Arthur Ferridge45min: We are back underway at Anfield!
Luis Diaz bombs straight into the corner and is taken down by Marquinhos, who is booked for his troubles and will miss the next match.
HALFTIME - Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:49That will do it for the first 45 - what a half of football!
Dembele’s clumsy opener is all that separates us on the night, but the aggregate score of course remains tied.
More goals will have to come in the second half, or we will face the dreaded penalty shootout!
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:42 , Arthur Ferridge40min: Only five minutes left in the half now and somehow neither side seems to be running out of steam.
It has been end-to-end, full-throttle football throughout the first half, and it is hard to believe we have only seen one goal.
Dembele becomes the latest to curl one agonisingly close to the far corner.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:35 , Arthur Ferridge34min: Slot is looking quite red in the face in his technical area.
He won’t be used to watching his Liverpool side go behind, and he does not seem to be enjoying the show as PSG bomb forward again and Kvaratskhelia’s shot misses by a matter of centimetres.

Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:33 , Arthur Ferridge31min: It is wasteful from Dembele, who is clean through on goal and takes a heavy touch which is far too easy for Allison to collect.
That could quite easily have been 0-2. Nervous times for both sides.
Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:27 , Richard Jolly27 mins: Dembele is causing Liverpool problems whenever he drops off into midfield. No one is picking him up. It might be an issue for Arne Slot to address.

GOAL - Liverpool 0-1 PSG (1-1 Agg)
20:14 , Arthur Ferridge12min: PSG LEAD THROUGH DEMBELE! That is entirely against the run of play - Liverpool are caught with their trousers down after failing to finish their early chances.
PSG score on their first serious foray forward as Barcola mixes the ball in to Dembele. The cross doesn’t get there - it is blocked by Konate - but the ball falls away into the six yard box for Dembele to put away.
All square in the tie. 77 minutes left.

Liverpool 0-0 PSG (1-0 Agg)
20:11 , Arthur Ferridge10min: Close(ish) again for Liverpool. A corner finds an unmarked Van Dijk, whose shot is blocked again by Mendes, before Szoboslai rifles a follow-up shot into Row Z.
Liverpool 0-0 PSG (1-0 Agg)
20:07 , Arthur Ferridge6min: Salah is looking lively early. He picks up the ball on the halfway line, leaves Mendes for dead and dances through the PSG back line to set up a shot, which bends an agonising couple of inches wide of the left post.
Very positive start for Liverpool.
Liverpool 0-0 PSG (1-0 Agg)
20:05 , Arthur Ferridge4min: It is a cagey start here as PSG squander an early corner.
But it is Salah who misses the first big chance of the game. Mac Allister finds the Egyptian on the edge of the box with a largely open goal, but a late Nuno Mendes dive blocks his shot.
The less said about the resultant corner the better.
KICK OFF - Liverpool 0-0 PSG (1-0 Agg)
20:00 , Arthur FerridgeAlexis Mac Allister gets us underway at Anfield.

5 minutes to kickoff!
19:56Here. We. Go.
The energy in the stadium is palpable as the teams take to the pitch and the fans belt out a goosebump-raising rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’.
Its all to play for tonight. Let’s get into it.
Another record on the cards for Mo Salah
19:45 , Arthur FerridgeAnother day, another record equalled. It must get boring at some point.
Having been named in tonight’s starting XI, Opta report that Mohammed Salah will move level with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s second-most experienced Champions League player, with 73 appearances.
Only Jamie Carragher (80) has more.
Should Liverpool reach the final and Salah appear in every match, the Egyptian King will finish the season with 78. Might need one more season to cement that record!
'PSG need a historic Champions League night at Anfield'
19:43 , Richard JollyLiverpool have won an away first leg 39 times in Europe and gone through at Anfield on all 39 occasions so Paris Saint-Germain have to make history tonight if they are to be quarter-finalists. They have picked the same team as last week, hoping for the same performance and a different result. Liverpool are looking for the same team to produce the same result, but preferably with a different performance.
