Anfield, home ground of Liverpool - (Getty Images)

Follow live coverage as Liverpool face Manchester United today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:38

And breathe! After a thrilling ending at Anfield, the full-time whistle blows with the scoreline 2-2 between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. The game went to the interval goalless despite Liverpool shading the opening 45 minutes, but it was United who would open the scoring just seven minutes into the second half, Martinez the unlikely scorer as he thundered in off the crossbar. It took just seven minutes for Liverpool to draw themselves level, however, Gakpo cutting onto his right foot before placing into the top right corner. Liverpool then looked like they were on course for victory as, after De Ligt handled from Mac Allister's header, Salah stepped up to haunt United again by slotting home his penalty. United weren't done, though, with Amad coming up with another huge goal as he turned home from Garnacho's cross to secure his side a point. It could have been even better for United, but Maguire somehow fired over with the goal gaping in the dying seconds as Liverpool escape with a point. The hosts may still feel it's two points dropped though having registered 2.87 xG to United's 1.03, and they miss the chance to extend their lead over second-placed Arsenal to eight points, though they do still have a game in hand over the Gunners. United move up to 13th, and they will look to continue the momentum from this positive result when they travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round next Sunday. Meanwhile, it's EFL Cup action up next for Liverpool, visiting Tottenham in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday as they look to bounce back from this disappointment. That's all we have for you from Anfield, so thanks for your company and goodbye!

HOW HAS MAGUIRE NOT SCORED!?!? United's initial free-kick is cleared but the ball comes back, and Zirkzee manages to square it for Maguire in acres of space in the box. The United centre-back has all the time in the world but decides not to take a touch, and he can only scoop over the crossbar with the goal gaping! What a chance for United to clinch a stunning victory!

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:27

United do indeed get themselves up the field, and Amad manages to win a foul off Robertson. This could be one final opportunity for the visitors to try and snatch a winner of their own!

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:25

It's all hands on deck for United as their defence gets out well to block a Jota effort from range. The visitors are pinned back and trying to resist wave after wave of Liverpool pressure, and they desperately need to get themselves up the pitch.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:24

To the teams' credit, they are both giving absolutely everything to try and find a winner. It's incredibly open with both sides desperate for a magical moment!

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:23

As we enter seven minutes of additional time, Onana is again required to keep out Van Dijk. United then go straight up the other end with Garnacho seeing a shot blocked by Konate on the floor. What an ending this is at Anfield!

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:20

Now it's Liverpool's turn to threaten, with Jota cutting onto his right foot before stinging the palms of Onana with a fierce drive. Bradley then beats his man before testing Onana again, though the United goalkeeper turns behind for a corner.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

18:20

Fernandes looks to catch out Alisson at his near post, and it nearly comes off as Alisson spills behind for a corner.

LIVERPOOL HAVE A PENALTY!!! This could be a huge moment as after looking at the screen, Oliver decides to award a penalty! It's naive from De Ligt to have his arm that high, and it could be a really costly act for his team with the hosts having a massive chance to complete the turnaround...

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:57

PENALTY!?!? Liverpool players and fans scream for a spot-kick as Mac Allister's header from Alexander-Arnold's cross comes off De Ligt's arm. The United defender's arm is very high, and Oliver is going to the screen to take a look...

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:56

Mac Allister sees his name in lights and goes for an ambitious strike from range, but it's a poor effort and flies high into the Kop End behind the goal.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:39

A Liverpool corner from the left causes carnage in the United box, though Onana and his defenders eventually combine to scramble clear.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:35

The visitors get the ball rolling again for the second period.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:20

After a woeful defensive display against Newcastle, Amorim will surely be pleased with how his United side has defended so far here, restricting Liverpool to just the one shot on target. Slot will want more from his team, though they have accumulated 1.27 xG (expected goals) to the visitors' 0.4 so far.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:19

It's so far, so good for United as they go into the interval away at Liverpool with the scoreline 0-0 at Anfield. The hosts have done most of the pressing, going close through Gakpo and Gravenberch while Mac Allister saw a shot well-saved by Onana. However, United could have taken a surprise lead themselves moments before the interval, though Hojlund was denied by Alisson as we go into half-time goalless.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:18

HALF-TIME: LIVERPOOL 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:18

Diaz weaves into the United box, but he just can't quite get the ball out of his feet to get a shot away and he is eventually crowded out.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:17

There will be two minutes of additional time at the end of this first half.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:14

CHANCE! A huge opportunity for United to take a shock lead goes begging as Hojlund gets in down the left. He bears down on goal before firing, though Alisson does brilliantly to close the angle before making the save.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:11

If United are to come away with anything from this game, it's imperative they make it to the break on level terms. They have just five minutes plus added time to get to the halfway stage at 0-0.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:09

Following their 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture, Slot could become just the second Liverpool manager to do the league double over United in his first season with the club, after George Kay in 1936-37.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:07

United are struggling for an outball at the moment, with Hojlund increasingly isolated up top. It's wave after wave of Liverpool pressure, though in truth, Onana has rarely looked threatened.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:04

Liverpool’s Salah has scored more goals (12) and provided more assists (six) against United than any other player in Premier League history. However, the hosts' talisman has barely had a sniff so far.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:02

Mac Allister's 16th-minute effort remains the only shot on target we have seen in this game, and Amorim will be pleased with how his side has defended so far.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:01

CLOSE! Space opens up for Gravenberch to fire at goal from distance, and though his effort does get Onana scrambling to his right, the ball bounces wide of the left post. United will be pretty content to let Liverpool shoot from there.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

17:00

After the opening 25 minutes of play, no player had won more duels than Ugarte (four), whilst he's the only player on the pitch to have attempted 10 or more passes and complete them all (12).

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:56

United are getting a lot of bodies back behind the ball when Liverpool have possession. Despite coming into this game as big underdogs, they've successfully navigated the opening 25 minutes with their clean sheet intact.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:53

Yellow Card José Diogo Dalot Teixeira

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:53

United have just come into the game in the last couple of minutes, pushing further up the pitch and relieving the pressure on their backline.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:52

A rare chance for United goes awry as they get in behind the Liverpool defence. Dalot picks out Amad in the middle, though the cross is behind the forward and he can only head backwards before the chance is squandered.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:49

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League games against United (seven wins, five draws), going down 2-1 at Old Trafford in August 2022.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:47

BIG SAVE! Onana comes up huge for his team as Liverpool again threaten. Salah dinks a delightful ball into the box for Mac Allister who shoots first time, though Onana is there to make a vital stop with his feet.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:46

WIDE! Liverpool carve United open for the first time as Gravenberch slides in Gakpo, though the forward can only flick wide of the right post under pressure from the oncoming Onana.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:44

Alexander-Arnold sees a shot blocked by Martinez before Diaz fires over. Liverpool are the side pressing for the opener, though United have so far been resolute at the back.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:43

Ugarte is perhaps a little lucky not to receive a booking after hacking down Gakpo in midfield. Michael Oliver has a think but decides to dish out no further punishment than awarding Liverpool a free-kick.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:41

United have survived the opening 10 minutes, crucial against Liverpool and their vociferous home crowd. They've shown a few promising signs on the counter too without really troubling the hosts as of yet.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:39

Van Dijk is making his 216th appearance in the Premier League for Liverpool, the same amount as Michael Owen managed for the club during his career.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:38

Salah threatens for the first time, cutting onto his left foot and firing into the penalty area, though Maguire is well-placed to intercept.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:36

This is the first time under Amorim that United have named the same defence in back-to-back games. They looked porous against Newcastle, something they can't afford to be against a relentless Liverpool side.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:34

Fortunately for the visitors, Mainoo is okay to continue and re-enters the field of play.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:34

Mainoo is down and in pain after taking a leg to the face from Gravenberch. Having completely changed his central midfield to introduce more energy, this would be a real blow to Amorim if Mainoo has to come off.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:31

The hosts kick us off and we are under way!

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:29

The two teams enter the Anfield pitch in front of a predictably red-hot atmosphere. We are moments away from another edition of one of the Premier League's fiercest rivalry matches.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:29

Amorim came in for a lot of criticism over his decision to play an ageing midfield of Casemiro and Eriksen against an energetic Newcastle United side in an eventual 2-0 defeat last time out. It could have been a lot worse in truth, and Amorim opts to completely change the two starting central midfielders here with Mainoo and Ugarte coming in. The other alteration sees Zirkzee, who was hooked for Mainoo in the first half against Newcastle, drop to the bench for the returning Fernandes, who captains the side after missing the defeat against the Magpies through suspension.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:29

Slot makes just the one change to the team that started the 5-0 away thumping of West Ham last time out, with Konate replacing the injured Joe Gomez at centre-back. Alexander-Arnold, the subject of reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid, retains his place at right-back.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:08

Any encouragement from Ruben Amorim's three-game unbeaten run to start life at Old Trafford has quickly dwindled, following it up with six defeats in eight in all competitions to leave them heading into this daunting away fixture 14th in the Premier League. Perhaps inconceivably, there are even concerns over whether United could yet find themselves in relegation trouble, and with their current form and just a six-point gap to the drop zone, Amorim and the Red Devils surely need to start putting more points on the board to avoid any late-season drama at the wrong end of the Premier League.

Liverpool vs Manchester United

16:03

This game has beaten the weather after a flurry of snow, and the hosts will surely be chomping at the bit to play their out-form rivals. If it wasn't Liverpool's league to lose already, another slip-up from their closest title challengers Arsenal on Saturday away at Brighton has further cemented the status of Arne Slot's men as strong favourites for glory come May. They've rarely looked like stumbling this season, losing just once in the league, and another win here could extend their lead at the summit to a perhaps insurmountable eight points with a game in hand over second-placed Arsenal.
