Liverpool vs Everton LIVE: Premier League result, match stream and latest updates after Merseyside derby

Anfield relief: Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the second-half - (REUTERS)

Liverpool vs Everton - LIVE!

Diogo Jota’s second-half strike earned Liverpool a 1-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby to move them 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League. Arsenal’s victory on Tuesday night against Fulham had cut the gap to nine points and there were some nerves at Anfield, particularly when the two sides went in at half-time with it still goalless.

Everton had the better chance in the opening period, Beto going clean through on goal and seeing his effort bounce back off the post, and that came after James Tarkowski had been incredibly fortunate to avoid a red card for a wild challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.

The atmosphere became increasingly edgy after the break but it soon turned to relief, as Jota broke the deadlock just before the hour mark. He danced his way into the box past two challenges and drilled a low finish past Jordan Pickford, for what proved to be a derby winner. It leaves Liverpool 12 points above closest challenges Arsenal with eight matches remaining, as a Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season at the club moves ever closer.

Winning moment...

22:04 , Matt Verri

Really well-taken goal from Jota.

Couple of touches to get past the challenges and create the space for the shot, and then drilled low past Pickford.

That was enough for victory.

Liverpool go 12 points clear again!

That’s a massive Merseyside derby win for them, another hurdle cleared on the path to the Premier League title.

It’s getting closer...

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:56 , Matt Verri

90+6 mins: Swung in right on top of Kelleher, Pickford basically throws himself at it and the whistle goes for a foul.

Liverpool free-kick. That should - should - be that.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:55 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Corner Everton, in front of the away fans.

This is pretty much it. Pickford coming up...

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:54 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Superb volleyed clearance from Jones at right-back, just as Branthwaite appeared to be free at the back post.

Camera naturally pans to Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:53 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: A few more seconds ticked away.

Endo on to replace Salah... wouldn’t say that’s a straight swap.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:51 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Six minutes added on.

Think Everton wanted a bit more than that. Six hours, maybe.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:49 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Nunez needed some treatment after that Pickford challenge and he’s picked up a booking for his troubles.

He seems to have no idea what it was for... think the fact he not very subtly rolled back onto the pitch to get that treatment probably played a role.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:47 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Nunez pokes the ball away from Pickford and gets wiped out in the box.

But the whistle had gone about ten seconds earlier, which neither played seemed to have heard. Or the Liverpool fans.

Pickford is lucky, that would have been a penalty.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:45 , Matt Verri

84 mins: There is no real sign of Everton getting back into this.

If anything, Liverpool look as dangerous as they have all match, with more space now on offer. Jones has a shot, but it’s charged down.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:42 , Matt Verri

81 mins: Diaz cuts inside onto his right foot in the box, low strike is blocked by Tarkowski.

Big appeals for handball as it bobbles around in the area, referee waves away the appeals. VAR quickly checks, no penalty there.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:41 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Liverpool doing a good job of ticking away the seconds, controlling possession and taking their time over every throw-in.

Toffees struggling to get a kick, let alone a chance.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:38 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Three more changes for Everton. Match is very stop-start now.

Broja, Young and Iroegbunam are on to replace Beto, Garner and Alcaraz.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:35 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Jota’s night is over - job done for him.

Nunez on. It’s rarely boring with him, for better or worse.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:32 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Not great from Konate and it allows Everton the chance to get the defenders up for a corner.

Garner swings it in, Kelleher with a bit of a flap... behind for another one.

It will be Garner to take this one too, from the opposite side. Mac Allister doing a fair wrestling job on Tarkowski, gets away with it.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:30 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Ndiaye on for Everton to replace Harrison.

That might be as close as the Toffees come to ‘going for it’ in these final 20 minutes or so.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:28 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Salah has a run at Mykolenko, who hooks the ball out of play for a corner.

Beto with the header at the near post, Mac Allister will get a second chance to whip the corner in. Liverpool into double figures for these now.

Again Everton comfortably deal with it.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:25 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Jota screams at the linesman as a couple of decisions go against him.

Yellow card for dissent, which he responds to with a sarcastic clap and more words at the officials.

Treading a fine line...

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:23 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Pickford still seems to be wasting time whenever he has the ball in his hands.

Just as strange is the Liverpool fans booing and demanding he hurries up. Let him hold it for 30 minutes if he wants...

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

21:20 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Van Dijk doing his best to try and get Beto sent off, with the striker already on a yellow card.

Liverpool captain hasn’t particularly enjoyed that battle tonight, he’s looked unusually rattled.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Everton | Diogo Jota 57'

21:18 , Matt Verri

That helps!

Jota dances his way into space in the box and lashes a finish low past Pickford.

Really composed... and there’s a lot of relief in that stadium!

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

21:16 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Anfield crowd getting very edgy.

Jones standing still with the ball in his own half and there’s a roar of frustration.

Another one shortly after when the flag goes up, as Salah looks to get in behind.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

21:14 , Matt Verri

53 mins: It’s another real chance for Everton on the counter, Harrison leading the charge.

Numbers up with him, but he passes it straight to Kelleher.

Everton’s final ball on the break has been largely terrible.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

21:13 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Gravenberch tries his luck from distance, Pickford can only parry it straight out.

Big trouble with Salah lurking, but Branthwaite throws himself in front to head it out.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

21:11 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Liverpool continue to whip crosses in, Everton on the whole comfortable in dealing with them.

More like it as they play through the defence this time, Jota getting a shot away. Pickford saves with his feet, but the offside flag is already up.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

21:08 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Bit of a nothing cross into the box from Konate, Tarkowski can only flick a header behind for a corner though.

Pickford comes, gets nowhere near it... bounces off Tarkowski and behind again.

Back underway!

21:05 , Matt Verri

Up and running in the second-half!

Beto's big moment

21:00 , Matt Verri

And this was the big chance of the half.

Ragged defending from Van Dijk, Beto clean through... denied by the post.

Would be surprised if Everton got a better opportunity tonight.

Tarkowski fortunate?

20:56 , Matt Verri

Here is that potential red card incident.

Tarkowski got the ball at first, but he then caught Mac Allister so high... not in control at all.

VAR checked it but it stayed as a yellow card.

HT: Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:50 , Matt Verri

And it’s a big chance right on half-time!

Alcaraz was free in the middle, but he can’t hit the target with the header.

That is half-time - almost silent at Anfield as the whistle goes. Home fans are on edge.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:49 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Konate and Van Dijk look really nervy when that ball is sent long. Beto doing a great job.

Gets better of Konate, plays it back to Alcaraz and his strike is deflected over for a corner.

Deep to the back post, Konate gets up above Branthwaite and Tarkowski.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:47 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Another Liverpool corner.

Pickford off his line and it’s a good punch, and now Everton can break.

Alcaraz tries to play in Beto, but he can’t take it in his stride. Ball eventually crossed in, Beto ends up effectively with a karate kick on Kelleher.

Needs to be careful, already on a yellow card.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Ball set back to Gravenberch, his first-time strike takes a deflection off Tarkowski but it takes it into Pickford’s hands.

Four minutes added on.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:44 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Sensational ball in from Gravenberch, Tarkowski does brilliantly to get a touch and flick it away from Jota. He would have had a tap-in.

Comes to Robertson, and he slices his effort high and wide.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:42 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Corner for Everton, these are big moments for them. Need to make the most of them.

And they don’t. Floated to the back post, Alcaraz can only loop a header up for Kelleher to claim.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:40 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Dear me, nearly disastrous from Beto.

In his own half, under no pressure and almost produces a perfect through ball for Jota. Tarkowski has to step in.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Everton are now getting some joy on the counter.

Harrison is the spare man over this time, pass to him isn’t good enough though and Van Dijk can step in.

Liverpool straight up the other end, Salah wins them the corner.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:36

36 mins: Turning into a fairly frustrating match for Liverpool. Just so many Everton bodies for them to get through.

Diaz looks the best bet for the hosts, he’s the one getting the space out wide. Not a lot of it on the opposite flank for Salah.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:34 , Matt Verri

33 mins: OFF THE POST!

Saying that... what a chance for Everton!

Doucoure’s pass is poor but Beto makes something of it, bundling his way through Van Dijk’s wild hack at the ball.

Clean through on goal, only Kelleher to beat... denied by the woodwork. Had to score!

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:33 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Everton win it back, their only option is to send it long to Beto, and he has nobody up to support him.

Liverpool able to stay on the attack pretty much constantly now.

Diaz free in the box, shot from a tight angle is blocked. Everton can’t get out... and don’t seem to have much interest in doing so.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Double fist pump from Konate to celebrate Beto getting booked.

A pointless yellow card too, the striker poking the ball away as Konate bent down to pick it up for a throw-in.

At the other end, Diaz gets a nudge from O’Brien and goes down. Referee not interested.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:29 , Matt Verri

28 mins: There’s Salah’s first chance of the match.

A lot of Liverpool’s attacks are coming down their left through Diaz.

He clips a cross to the back post, Salah is free at the back post but he nods the header straight at Pickford.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Jota gets in behind, but Tarkowski is there to clear the cut-back.

Comes back to Jota, and he slices an effort wide of the far post.

Better spell for Liverpool, pinning Everton right back.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Brilliant pass from Konate out to Diaz, but he turns inside into a wall of blue shirts.

Winger has another chance to run at O’Brien, goes on the outside this time and wins a corner.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: VAR taking a bit of time over this, but eventually the decision is confirmed.

That will give Everton a bit of confidence though. One long ball was all it took.

GOOO... OFFSIDE!

20:21 , Matt Verri

Everton think they have the lead, but the flag is up!

Out of nothing. Tarkowski lumps it in behind the Liverpool defence, Beto strong enough to hold off Van Dijk and he pokes a finish past Kelleher.

It’s very, very tight, but think he is just off.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:18 , Matt Verri

17 mins: O’Brien flings a long throw into the Everton box.

Liverpool don’t deal with it, ball bounces through to Alcaraz and his shot at the back post is charged down by Konate.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:15 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Mac Allister is back up, that could easily have ended in a serious injury for him.

So, free-kick to Liverpool just outside the box. Perfect angle for a right-footer.

Szoboszlai and Salah standing over it. It’s Szoboszlai... goes to the goalkeeper’s side and it flies wide.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:13 , Matt Verri

12 mins: VAR checking this, but it’s quickly cleared. Will stay as a yellow card.

Mac Allister still down getting treatment.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:12 , Matt Verri

11 mins: First chance for Liverpool as the space opens up for Jota on the edge of the box, good block to deny him.

Tarkowski then absolutely FLIES into a challenge on Mac Allister. He got the ball, but then clattered the Liverpool midfielder.

Terrible challenge - really high. He’s lucky that’s only a yellow card.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:09 , Matt Verri

8 mins: One-two between Gueye and Alcaraz, who goes down under a challenge from Jones in the box.

Referee waves away what were pretty half-hearted appeals.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Bit of a concern for Liverpool here.

Van Dijk pings a lovely ball over the top to Diaz, who rolls his left ankle as he tries to bring it down.

Looks in a fair bit of pain, but he’s back up and doesn’t need any treatment. Not moving particularly well.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Everton have been really direct in these opening minutes. On the rare occasion they have had the ball, it’s been pumped long pretty much every time.

Fair to say they have no interest in getting caught out by the Liverpool press.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

20:03 , Matt Verri

2 mins: O’Brien caught on the ball, Diaz pounces on it and skips along the byline, before going down in the box.

Whistle goes... to say the ball had already gone out. Liverpool have to settle for a corner, it has been a quick start from them as expected.

Swung into the six-yard box, Konate heads over. And immediately has a little shoving match with Tarkowski.

KICK-OFF!

20:00 , Matt Verri

We’re up and running!

19:58 , Matt Verri

It’s a big match, so Peter Drury is of course going full Shakespeare on us. You can have your own opinions on that...

Handshakes done, coin toss done. You’ll Never Walk Alone blaring out - it’s time for kick-off!

Here we go!

19:55 , Matt Verri

Teams are in the tunnel.

You won’t be surprised to hear that it’s a great atmosphere. Have to think Liverpool are going to try and come flying out of the blocks.

Pre-match thoughts from the Everton camp

David Moyes has been speaking to Sky Sports.

Didn’t take long to be asked about Everton’s miserable record at Anfield...

Not long now!

19:44 , Matt Verri

Warm-ups ongoing at Anfield, just over 15 minutes to go until kick-off.

Defeats to PSG and Newcastle before the international break for Liverpool, leaving their full focus on the Premier League.

They are firmly in control of the title race, but another loss here and it could start to get nervy...

Slot explains Alisson absence

19:35 , Matt Verri

Arne Slot has been asked about Alisson missing out on the squad tonight.

He returned to Liverpool after sustaining a concussion while on international duty with Brazil, and he has not yet fully recovered.

"We as a club follow the protocol and he had to tick all the boxes and yesterday he didn't tick the last box, so that means he cannot start,” Slot says of Alisson.

"The good thing for us is we've got Caoimhin Kelleher, who has shown many times this season and in previous seasons that he's maybe even too good to be Ali's back-up."

Moyes: Everton further away from Liverpool than ever

19:27 , Matt Verri

Everton are looking for only their second win at Anfield since 1999.

David Moyes is in his second spell as Everton boss, having left the club in 2013, and he admitted at his pre-match press conference that the Toffees have a massive gap to close to their rivals.

"We might be further away from Liverpool than we've ever been at the moment," Moyes said.

"I think by the time we left here 12 years ago, I think we were much closer to Liverpool. We were competing in the same areas of the league at the time.

“I think at the moment it's probably the biggest gulf between the two clubs."

Ferdinand: Alexander-Arnold should be thanked

19:20 , Matt Verri

Liverpool fans should be thanking Trent Alexander-Arnold and wishing him good luck for his impending move to Real Madrid, according to Rio Ferdinand.

After months of speculation, January offers and his contract expiring in the summer, news emerged during the recent international break that Alexander-Arnold - currently sidelined with an ankle injury - was on the verge of agreeing to join the LaLiga giants.

Former Manchester United and England captain Ferdinand believes any ire felt by Liverpool fans over Alexander-Arnold’s likely exit should be aimed at the club.

“You should be saying thank you and good luck. Trent Alexander-Arnold, you didn't pay a penny for him. He came through your academy, he’s one of your own and he won it all,” he said on the latest episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

“This kid has been there, worn the shirt, been one of your best players, most productive players in one of the most successful periods in recent years.

“And because he's choosing to go and leave the club, not for a rival, not for a team in the Premier League, he's going to the biggest club right now in the world, which is Real Madrid. You should be saying: ‘You know what, I'd love him to stay but well done’.

“You should be clapping him off and giving him a hero's welcome when he eventually comes back in 15 years, when he finishes his career. The club have to take some responsibility. They've allowed him to get to this point.”

In the building!

19:11 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have arrived at Anfield...

Last time they met...

19:04 , Matt Verri

It all kicked off!

James Tarkowski snatched a last-gasp point for Everton, and the fun continued after the full-time whistle.

Red cards for Curtis Jones, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arne Slot, who had to serve a two-match touchline ban.

Interesting team selection from Slot!

18:55 , Matt Verri

Well then...

Alisson is not fit, despite Slot’s suggestion that he would be, so it’s Kelleher starting in goal for Liverpool tonight.

Jones looks set to fill in at right-back, with Slot preferring him to Quansah. That’s a bold call.

The likes of Nunez, Gakpo and Chiesa again have to settle for spots on the bench.

Slot targets set-piece improvement

18:27 , Matt Verri

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot believes his players have plenty to learn from Arsenal despite being poised to beat the Gunners to the Premier League title.

There has been little to separate Arsenal and Liverpool for long stretches of this season as the two sides established themselves as the leading title contenders in the first half of the season, though Slot pointed out that the Gunners set the standard from set-pieces.

He said: “We're always defensively the best team in the league when it comes to corners. We hardly concede goals. Then we concede three or four and it's already 26 per cent. We have some of the best players for defending corners.”

The Dutchman, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord last summer, acknowledged the growing importance of set-pieces in the modern game.

He continued: “You cannot win a big game if you have a negative balance in your set-pieces. Arsenal shows us on a weekly basis the strength of set-pieces.

“We want to do better attacking corners but we hope to keep our record defensively on set-pieces.”

Carragher gives verdict on Alexander-Arnold situation

18:19 , Matt Verri

Jamie Carragher has criticised the “toxic” social media response aimed at Trent Alexander-Arnold as a summer move to Real Madrid seemingly draws closer.

The Liverpool right-back is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to make a free transfer to play with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool at the age of six and has won every major honour available with the club, but the nature of his departure as a free agent is one that has left sections of the fanbase frustrated.

However, Carragher insisted abuse aimed at the 26-year-old is not representative of what most Liverpool supporters feel, making it clear that he wants Alexander-Arnold to succeed in Spain.

“I always think an international break is a time where every club are getting things in order for the summer and speaking to agents, who’s coming and going,” Carragher said.

“So it was always going to blow up at some stage with this.

“People look at the reaction, but social media is so toxic – ‘He shouldn’t play for the club again,’ or ‘Slot shouldn’t play him’ – people use that now as the barometer of the fan’s feelings, but it’s just a mad place, it’s not what normal [fans think].”

Stage is set!

18:11 , Matt Verri

It’s an absolutely perfect evening in Liverpool!

Standard Sport prediction

18:03 , Matt Verri

Wednesday’s result will come down to how quickly Liverpool can recover from the funk that came with a cup final defeat and Champions League elimination - and Everton will be more than willing to add to the misery.

That said, Liverpool will be keen for revenge after having a Goodison win snatched from them last time out and could take advantage of Everton’s injury-hit squad.

Liverpool 1-0 Everton

Everton team news

17:55 , Matt Verri

As has become the norm this season, Everton will cross the park with an extensive injury list.

Key midfielders Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil are both recovering from knee injuries and have returned to training but will not be fit for Wednesday.

Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in the same boat, back on the grass but not yet ready to play.

Vitalii Mykolenko will face a late fitness test ahead of the match, while Orel Mangala is set to remain on the sidelines for several months after injuring his ACL in late January.

Liverpool team news

17:47 , Matt Verri

Liverpool have been boosted by the return to fitness of Alisson Becker and Ryan Gravenberch, but will remain without Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The right-back, who is reportedly on the verge of sealing a free summer transfer to Real Madrid, has not featured since suffering an ankle injury against PSG.

Alisson and Gravenberch both took full part in training at Kirkby on Monday after recent fitness scares and have been confirmed as fit to play by Slot.

Conor Bradley is said to be making impressive progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury, but won’t be ready to play against Everton.

Likewise Joe Gomez, who was seen doing some light running drills back out on the grass on Monday as he works his way back from hamstring surgery.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Alisson, Quansah, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Salah, Szoboszlai, Diaz, Gakpo
