Liverpool venue serving up epic festive roasts in the cosiest setting - review

A Liverpool venue is serving up giant festive roast dinners in the cosiest of settings.

The Watering Can, in Greenbank Park, is hosting festive afternoon teas and wreath making in the run up to Christmas and the venue has been serving giant roast dinners with all the trimmings - but you need to be quick if you want to get one.

Unable to wait until the big day itself to tuck into a festive feast, I visited with my family and had an afternoon that was filled with Christmas spirit (not literally I must add, I was driving). Arriving at the Greenbank Road venue on a chilly afternoon, when the park was covering in snow and ice, it felt like the perfect setting for our Christmas lunch.

Inside, the tables were packed with people enjoying themselves, with twinkling fairy lights, huge garlands, nutcrackers dolls and sparkling decorations creating a truly cosy atmosphere. I felt instantly relaxed as we headed to our table and the waiter plonked down a pot of huge salty olives to tuck into, while we browsed the menu.

A busy restaurant meant the waiting staff were juggling many tables, but it wasn’t long before we were tucking into our starters, my husband choosing what he described as ‘perfectly cooked’ pan fried Queen scallops with a sweetcorn puree that had an earthy texture. It was served with nduja butter, which added warmth to the dish.

I opted for the Stornoway black pudding and crispy fried duck egg, with béarnaise sauce and potato rosti. It came beautifully served, with fresh tiny herbs adding pops of flavour to the completely moreish dish.

Deciding to save the turkey for Christmas Day and with the salt marsh Cumbrian lamb rump already sold out, my husband and I ordered the Aberdeen Angus beef rump for our main. We had a bit of a wait, but it was absolutely worth it.

I couldn’t quite believe how many slices of beef there was - served pink, but with a perfectly browned crust, it melted in mouth and was full of rich flavour. Another star of the dish was the giant Yorkshire pudding, the batter the perfect ratio of fluffy and crispy.

Chunky honey roasted carrots, sprouts that thankfully still had a nice bite to them and giant, soft, buttery, herby potatoes completed the dish, along with a generous amount of rich, thick gravy that I poured over in lashings.

The kids tucked into smaller turkey dinners, devouring their epic Yorkshire puddings and mopping up nearly everything on their plate. Special mention to the side orders we picked - truffle cauliflower cheese, which tasted obscenely good, the truffle flavour really enriching the thick cheesy topping.

And of course no festive dinner is complete without pigs in blankets, and with these served in cranberry sauce, they had a sweet stickiness to them that worked perfectly with the crisp salty chunks of pork.

I’d had my eye on the sticky toffee pudding at the start of the meal, but feeling far too full after the roast, my husband and I decided to share the lemon meringue, which came with limoncello lemon curd, whipped cream, edible flowers and berries. It tasted just as stunning as it looked, with the zingy lemon working perfectly with the thick cream and gooey meringue pieces.

The kids visited The Watering Can’s epic cake counter - it’s worth visiting for this alone to be honest - and chose a slice of Biscoff sponge, which they slowly picked over until it was all gone, salivating over each mouthful.

If you’ve got time to squeeze in a festive roast dinner at The Watering Can this weekend, you certainly won’t be disappointed. Or wait until January and make it a new year’s resolution to visit for one of its usual Sunday roasts.
