Liverpool urged to sign two midfielders after Darwin Nunez transfer completed

Former Liverpool midfielder Michael Thomas has urged the Reds to add three new signings in addition to Darwin Nunez - including Jude Bellingham and Kalvin Phillips.

Nunez is close to completing an £85m move to Anfield as the six-time European champions add more strength to their attacking line. But it is thought, if not this summer then next, they will also look to bolster their midfield options.

England international midfielders Phillips and Bellingham have been names on the lips of many since their emergence for club and country - with the latter catching the eye despite being in the infancy of his professional career.

And Thomas reckons the Reds should go knocking on the door of Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund respectively - as well as bringing in competition for their England team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

He told CaughtOffside : "Darwin Nunez has had a really good season for Benfica and all the top teams are looking at him.

"He will be a great signing. After that, I think a backup at right-back would be good to fight with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joe Gomez played well there when called upon, but I prefer him in the centre.

"Kalvin Phillips could also be a good asset depending on the price. He’s surely not going to Manchester United so there might be an opportunity there. I also firmly believe Liverpool will be in for Jude Bellingham if the opportunity ever arises, though that will probably be one for next summer. I’d be very happy with Phillips or Bellingham for the midfield."

We have reported that there is an 'acceptance' that it will be difficult to tempt Dortmund to the negotiating table this summer for Bellingham after Erling Haaland's departure to Manchester City.
