Liverpool transfer round-up: 'Turkish Lionel Messi' targeted after Mason Mount boost

Liverpool won't remember last season with great fondness.

Although Jurgen Klopp's side defeated Manchester City 3-1 to win the Community Shield, they failed to go far the Champions League, FA Cup or Carabao Cup. They also finished fifth in the Premier League table and will play in the Europa League next term.

Klopp will be keen to win the Europa League after losing the 2016 final to Sevilla, yet the Liverpool boss will need to bring in reinforcements this summer to make his team competitive again. He must also replace some of his departing stars.

The Reds have confirmed Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - plus several youngsters - will leave the club when their contracts expire this month. But who is Klopp after? Here are the latest transfer rumours from Merseyside.

Turkish wonderkid targeted

Liverpool are interested in signing Fenerbahce attacking midfielder Arda Guler, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The 18-year-old has been described as the 'Turkish Lionel Messi' after his breakthrough season with Fenerbahce. The talent scored six goals and provided seven assists in 35 club appearances last term, helping Fenerbahce win the Turkish cup.

Guler also made his senior international debut in November and scored in Turkey's 2-0 win against Wales on Monday. He has won four senior caps to date.

Guler's impressive CV has attracted the interest of Liverpool, AC Milan, Benfica, Sevilla and Real Madrid. It's believed he has a €17.5million (£15m) release clause in his contract.

Reds step up Chiesa interest

Liverpool are considering a €40m (£34.4m) offer for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport.

It's claimed Juventus are willing to cash in on the Italian, 25, after a modest return of two goals and five assists in Serie A last season. The Reds have been linked with Chiesa, who won Euro 2020 and was named in the Team of the Tournament, for some time.

Juventus are thought to be holding out for €60m (£51.6m) for Chiesa, who still has two years left on his contract. Signing a forward is not a priority for Liverpool, as they have Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on their books.

Mount boost

Chelsea have rejected a second offer from Manchester United for Liverpool target Mason Mount, according to The Athletic.

Mount, 24, has just a year remaining on his existing deal. Chelsea are struggling to agree a new contract with the England international and could be forced to sell him this summer, putting Liverpool on red alert. Yet it's Man Utd who have moved for him.

The Red Devils have offered £50m for Mount (£45m up front), but it's believed Chelsea want £65m (£60m up front). Man Utd's failure to agree a deal for Mount could allow Liverpool to beat their biggest rivals to the midfielder's signature.
