Liverpool transfer round-up: Reds ‘looking’ for midfielder with 'rapid progress' on deal

Liverpool may have kick-started their Premier League season with a thumping 9-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday but the Reds are still in desperate need of one more signing in order to further their strength in depth for the remainder of the season.

And according to the latest reports, the Merseyside outfit are now actively ‘looking’ for a midfielder, amid links to a number of targets, although one of those has now made a huge claim over his future at his current club. Elsewhere, Schalke are said to be making ‘rapid’ progress in their pursuit of young defender Sepp van den Berg.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer stories coming out of Anfield…

Reds ‘looking’ for midfielder

A long term injury to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and further issues sustained to Thiago, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita already this season have left Liverpool desperately short in midfield and has left the club in a position where they have no choice but to revisit the transfer market.

And amid links to Barcelona ’s Frenkie de Jong, it has now been revealed that, although they aren’t said to be interested in the Dutchman, they are in the market for a new signing and could well spend more money this summer by the time the transfer window closes this week.

According to CBS Sports, the Reds are not after De Jong but are “looking elsewhere”, which all but confirms that Jurgen Klopp’s side are after a new midfielder, although who they end up signing is yet to be determined amid links to a host of players.

Liverpool target makes claim over future

It was reported last week that Liverpool were targeting Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley as they go in search of replacements for a number of injured players in that position, but the 21-year-old has now made a huge claim over his future following interest from a number of clubs.

O’Riley has claimed that there’s ‘a lot’ of interest in him and he has already been subject to ‘enquiries’ from several teams, although he has now revealed his intentions to stay at Celtic beyond this summer, which has dealt Liverpool a big blow should their interest be legitimate.

Speaking to Danish outlet Bold, O’Riley said: “While it’s great to know there’s a lot of interest in me, I only have one thing in mind and that’s to do well for Celtic.‎ I have no plans to leave Celtic, so if nothing happens, nothing happens, and that’s fine.”

Schalke making ‘rapid’ progress for defender

Reds defender Van Den Berg has been the subject of interest from Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers of late but it has now been revealed that Bundesliga outfit Schalke are leading the race for his signature and are making ‘rapid’ progress on a deal.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, with the German club said to be rapidly progressing towards working out the agreement for the defender’s loan, as they look to get a deal over the line before the transfer deadline later this week.

Van Den Berg impressed during an 18-month spell with Preston North End in the second tier after signing for the Lancashire outfit in February 2021 and, until now, it was thought that he had opted to sign for Blackburn for the remainder of this season, although Schalke now seems to be his preference.
