Liverpool transfer round-up: Reds given Bellingham hope with last-minute deal on the cards

There are now just two days left of the January transfer window and the clock is ticking on any lingering hopes that Liverpool might reinforce their squad.

The Reds got the window off to a flyer by announcing the signing of Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven before the month had even started. They pipped rivals Manchester United to the attacker and filled the fanbase full of hope.

But form has been poor throughout January and the need for a rejuvenation is clear in the summer, even if it cannot be done in the next 48 hours. Jude Bellingham remains the number one transfer target for Liverpool, while departures will also be needed to reshape an ailing squad. Here are the latest pieces of gossip concerning the club...

Bellingham hope for summer

Liverpool will do everything in their power to land Bellingham at the end of the season – and they have been handed a morsel of hope in what will surely be a difficult process.

Borussia Dortmund are no mugs at selling star players, having made £73m and £51m respectively by moving on Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland over the past two summers. They want to avoid a repeat by keeping Bellingham this time around, but Fabrizio Romano says he is “expected” to leave, due largely to the weight of all the interest.

Liverpool will have to fight Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and likely many more to get him.

Reds looking for last-minute deals

Like a shopper on a budget, Liverpool are hanging around the reduced section awaiting a bargain.

The Daily Mail says the club have been looking at the squads of teams like Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain in the hope that a late deal can be done for a midfielder.

Liverpool are happy to wait until the summer to make their main moves in the transfer market, but they are also open to any opportunities now.

The need will soon be acute in midfield. Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner are all out of contract in the summer, while the loan deal for Arthur Melo will expire too.

Phillips could leave

It seems likely that Liverpool will remain quiet during the final hours of the transfer window – but one deal could still go through.

Nat Phillips has been the subject of plenty of speculation over the past year, but remains a Liverpool player for now. That could still change, with the Reds open to offers for the centre-back.

“It depends on the offers,” Klopp told reporters last week. “We have to be prepared for pretty much everything. We don’t know. The 31st is the deadline day and we will see. I don’t know.”

Liverpool remain in negotiations to sell Phillips, but may have to drop their £10m valuation if a deal is to be done.
