Liverpool transfer round-up: Jurgen Klopp 'makes phone call' amid Jude Bellingham boost

The hectic winter schedule could force Liverpool's hand as they look to rise up the Premier League table in the second half of the season.

The Reds returned to top-flight action against Aston Villa on Boxing Day and games will come thick and fast over the next month, following the international break. Jude Bellingham remains at the top of the club's shopping list but Liverpool know prising the teenager from Borussia Dortmund will be anything but easy.

While the latest reports surrounding the midfielder are positive, Jurgen Klopp has also reportedly contacted an alternative target. Without further ado, here are the latest transfer stories concerning the red half of Merseyside.

Klopp calls Elmas

Jurgen Klopp has held a phone call with Eljif Elmas as Liverpool's search for a midfielder intensifies.

That is according to Ahmet Ercanlar, who claims the Reds manager told Elmas, 23, he would like him to join his squad at Anfield. The North Macedonia international joined Napoli from Fenerbahce in 2019 and his former club in Turkey would be entitled to some of the fee, should a transfer go through.

Elmas has made almost 150 appearances for the Italian giants and helped them win the Coppa Italia in the 2019/20 season. However, he has found minutes harder to come by this season, potentially opening the door for him to move to Liverpool.

Carragher's transfer instruction

Anfield legend Jamie Carragher suspects Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to spend up to a quarter of a billion pounds next summer, regardless of whether Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has sold the club.

FSG is open to offloading the Reds or accepting new investment during a season which has been a challenging one for the club. "It's interesting whether it is a sale or they need investment," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool's owners, 'I need £200m-£250m to spend in the summer'. That sounds like an outrageous figure, but that is what Man Utd and Chelsea spent last summer. These are the figures that Liverpool's rivals are spending."

Bellingham's uncertainty

Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham is yet to make a decision over his future, according to Transfersdotcom.

Reports in the lead-up to Christmas Day claimed the England international, 19, had decided to move to Real Madrid, who are pushing to bring him to the Spanish capital. However, this latest report claims Bellingham is yet to make a decision over his future, in news which comes as a major boost for Anfield chiefs.

While it is expected the player will leave Germany next summer, he has not reached a verdict on which club he will join. The report adds Bellingham has not discussed a transfer away from Dortmund with anyone at the Bundesliga club.
