Liverpool transfer round-up: Fernandez and Bellingham contact made as Chelsea plan Nunes hijack

There's just a couple of days to go until the transfer window slams shut and Liverpool could still be ready to do more business in the coming days.

The Reds have made just one signing this month so far, having welcomed Cody Gakpo to Anfield in a deal worth around £45million. Following injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, Jurgen Klopp moved quick to hijack Manchester United's proposed move for the Dutch international.

Meanwhile, there has been some talk surrounding the Reds' need to bring in a midfielder in January given their struggles in that position. But despite links with Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Jude Bellingham, the Reds haven't been able to sign one of those yet.

Here are all the rumours coming out of Anfield.

Liverpool held contact with Benfica and Dortmund

Liverpool have reportedly held talks with both Benfica and Borussia Dortmund over potentially signing Enzo Fernandez and Jude Bellingham this month.

The Reds have been linked with moves for Fernandez and Bellingham in the January transfer window as Jurgen Klopp tries to bolster his midfield options. However, with time ticking down until deadline day, it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Reds will be able to get a deal over the line before January 31.

It is understood the Reds have been working hard behind the scenes to sign a midfielder - and it has been revealed they held negotiations with Benfica and Dortmund for those two players.

Speaking to Empire of the Kop, Anas Bakhkhar from Foot Mercato said: "Just to remind everyone, there was a positive meeting during the World Cup between Amrabat’s entourage and Liverpool but unfortunately, his agent thought that Liverpool were linked with a lot of midfielders during this transfer window – like Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez and Liverpool were having discussions with Borussia Dortmund and Benfica."

Chelsea plan Nunes hijack

Chelsea are set to frustrate another one of their so-called 'Big Six' rivals by joining the race to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Portugal international, 24, is on Liverpool's transfer shortlist but he cannot leave Molineux in January having already played for two clubs this season. Nunes made two outings for former team Sporting Lisbon before joining Wolves for £38million last August.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Chelsea are interested in signing Nunes and could battle Liverpool for his signature in the summer. Both teams are 10 points behind Manchester United in fourth in the Premier League and are looking to improve their respective squads.

Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool do not have a budget that can challenge the Premier League's richest sides, including Chelsea. The Blues have been the biggest spenders in Europe since Boehly's takeover last summer, investing more than £400m in players.

Bajcetic pens new Liverpool deal

Spanish teenager Stefan Bajcetic has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool five days after making his first Premier League start.

The 18-year-old has signed a new deal until 2027 having broken into the side this season, with Saturday's start against Chelsea at Anfield his 10th appearance in all competitions.

Bajcetic also scored his first senior goal in the 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Boxing Day, and impressed in last week's FA Cup third round replay away at Wolves.

His emergence has seen him challenge the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho for a central midfield berth in recent months, with his energy and aggression in the role proving valuable to Klopp while several of his senior stars struggle this season.
