Liverpool transfer 'reboot' on way as Julian Ward set for Real Madrid response

The players may have dispersed across the globe, the coaching staff started well-earned downtime and the supporters adjusting to life without a game for a couple of months.

But still the pain of what happened in the Champions League final at the Stade de France - in terms of matters on the field - will linger for some time among those associated with Liverpool.

For the third time under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds fought their way to a European final only to fall to Spanish opposition, having previously failed against Sevilla in the Europa League in 2016 and, of course, Saturday's victors Real Madrid in the Champions League two years later.

While the first defeat had the more seismic ramifications - as well as missing out on the trophy, Liverpool also missed out on European football altogether the following season - each required a response. And history has determined the Reds reacted in the required manner.

The failure to secure Champions League football in 2016 scuppered a move for Klopp favourite Mario Gotze. Instead, Sadio Mane became the first big-money signing of the German's tenure, snapped up for £30million from Southampton in late June.

Joel Matip was already on his way on a free transfer from Schalke, while Gini Wijnaldum followed towards the end of July. All three would become integral parts of a Liverpool side that ultimately swept all before them a few years later, Mane and Matip also claiming the League Cup and FA Cup this season.

In the short term, though, Klopp's side bounced back by sealing a top-four berth that secured Champions League qualification and was the catalyst for the success that was to follow.

Loris Karius and Ragnar Klavan were also recruited that summer for small fees. Both would be in the squad for the Champions League final against Real Madrid two years later for the final time in their Liverpool careers, albeit for very differing reasons - Klavan coming to the natural end of his time after providing backup at centre-back, Karius counting the cost of his personal nightmare in Kiev.

Barely 48 hours after that defeat, Liverpool completed a cloak-and-dagger move for Fabinho for £43.7m with Naby Keita already on his way for £52.75m. Xherdan Shaqiri also joined the midfield, while the goalkeeping situation was addressed with £65m splashed out on Alisson Becker.

The Reds, of course, thrilled the following season in securing 97 points to finish second to Manchester City in the Premier League and then clinch a sixth European Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid.

So to this summer. Highly-rated youngster Fabio Carvalho has already agreed to join from Fulham, but the main concern at present is over possible departures. Divock Origi has gone, James Milner still hasn't penned a new deal and everything points to Mane wanting to end his six-year stay amid interest from Bayern Munich. Mohamed Salah, too, continues to prompt long-term doubts with his contract talks still at an impasse.

Should Mane or anyone else depart - particularly from midfield - they will need replacing. And addressing any shortcomings will be more difficult given the high bar the current squad have set during the season and finances not being as readily available compared to the likes of Manchester City.

Matters are also different in that Julian Ward is officially taking over the reins from the departing Michael Edwards as sporting director, the new man facing an instant test of his credentials in his new post.

Liverpool, though, have shown they know how to respond to European setbacks under Klopp. Few would be surprised at another successful reboot having taken place by the time the Premier League kicks off on August 6.
