Liverpool have made a significant step towards their second signing of the summer transfer window by agreeing a deal to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig.
With James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Arthur Melo all leaving, it was clear that central midfield would be an area of key importance this summer. Alexis Mac Allister was signed swiftly from Brighton and Szoboszlai is now set to follow suit.
The Reds have developed a reputation for getting business done in an efficient manner with little fuss and supporters will hope that a deal for Hungary captain Szoboszlai will get over the line in the coming days.
Here is the latest from the club as we move from June into July.
Szoboszlai has admiration for Klopp
Liverpool have agreed to pay Szoboszlai’s release clause just before it expires – and the 22-year-old should be delighted with the development.
The attack-minded midfielder is very familiar with the Red Bull system, having joined Leipzig from sister club Salzburg in 2021, but he has always admired Jurgen Klopp from afar.
"I really like Klopp," he said in 2020. "The way he can inspire his players is unbelievable.
"Even when they have nothing, they can stand up and his players can achieve anything. For me, he is the best manager in the world.”
Mount explanation
The move for Szoboszlai comes after Liverpool decided not to pursue a deal for Mason Mount, who is now set to join Manchester United from Chelsea.
United are ready to pay £55m, with a further £5m in add-ons, for the 24-year-old, who will sign a five-year deal worth £250,000-a-week before bonuses.
Klopp is a fan of Mount and the club did consider a move for him, in part due to the fact he only had one year left on his Chelsea contract.
But the prospect of a bidding war with United turned them away, with the Reds aware that Chelsea would drag things out and play the two rivals off each other.
Carvalho plan
Fabio Carvalho has been sent out on loan to RB Leipzig, but the young midfielder still has a future at Liverpool.
Carvalho has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since joining from Fulham and cut a frustrated figure last season.
The 20-year-old will play for Leipzig for the entirety of the 2023/24 season, yet Liverpool were reluctant to sell him because they believe he can be a success under Klopp.
