Liverpool told to consider selling Thiago Alcantara amid midfield rebuild

Jose Enrique has urged Liverpool to consider selling Thiago Alcantara if a reasonable offer comes in.

A hip injury ruled Thiago out for most of last season, with Jurgen Klopp not able to start him since the 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in February. The Spaniard’s frustrating campaign epitomised Liverpool’s mood overall as he struggled to make an impact in 2022-23.

It is no secret that Klopp is planning a midfield rebuild at Anfield as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner have all left the club. Alexis Mac Allister joined from Brighton as the first big-money arrival of the summer.

But Thiago would be the most high-profile casualty should Liverpool decide to cash in. At 32 and with one year left on his contract, the former Bayern Munich is unlikely to rake in big bucks.

While the veteran has, at times, been told a possession-based style contradicts Klopp’s high-pressing game, nobody can discredit his experience. League titles in Spain and Germany, a Champions League gong, several English honours and 46 Spain caps make him a valuable member of the Reds’ dressing room.

A report last month claimed Thiago is wanted by former club Barcelona, where he emerged as a youngster over a decade ago. Ex-Liverpool defender Enrique has admitted he would sell the midfielder if the price were right, highlighting his injury record.

“I love him as a player,” he told his Instagram followers. “But I believe if an offer comes in for him, we (Liverpool) should take it.

"He is a top player but, most of the time, he is injured. We need more reliable players.”
