Liverpool told not to make major £42m Barcelona transfer raid

Liverpool have been told by a club icon that they “don’t need” to sign Barcelona youngster Gavi.

The Reds have been frequently linked with a move for the talented 17-year-old, who is tipped for a bright future. His contract at the Nou Camp is set to run out in 2023, and Barca are reportedly in early talks over an extension.

It has been reported in the past that Liverpool are preparing to make an offer to sign Gavi, with the player currently having a €50million (£42m) release clause in his current deal. However, those reports suggesting that Liverpool could sign Gavi are tentative at this moment in time.

Former Liverpool forward Steve McManaman has explained why he thinks Liverpool should not be looking to sign Gavi. The ex-Red winger went on to say that he thinks his old club would be wiser making a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham.

“Liverpool don't need Gavi at this moment in time,” McManaman told Horseracing.net .

“Maybe they could have an eye on him for the future, but I just think at this moment it won’t happen.

“He needs to stay at Barcelona and play football. He needs to fill out and get more experience and become a proper La Liga or Premier League player and he needs to play more games.

“At this moment in time, for that kind of money, when Liverpool have got about seven midfielders anyway, I just can’t see it happening. You need to see him play a lot more games.

“If you were picking between Jude Bellingham or Gavi you’d pick Jude because of the size of him, the experience he has and the fact that he’s played 100 more games.

“Gavi is a wonderful talent but I just think he’s far too young at the moment for Liverpool to be even looking at signing him for a fee like that.”
