Liverpool to step up Jurgen Klopp contract talks ahead of Newcastle United clash

Newcastle United may have a say in the Premier League title race this weekend, as the Magpies prepare to face Liverpool on Saturday. The Reds are contesting a tight battle with Manchester City and both sides know that dropping points even once could be critically damaging to them.

Liverpool may be boosted before their trip to St James' Park as it has been reported that Jurgen Klopp will enter into contract discussions with the powers-that-be at Anfield. The German had previously been expected to move on from Liverpool - where he has delivered every trophy except the FA Cup, which they are in the final of this season - but now he may be set to extend his contract, rather than let it expire.

Newcastle lost 3-1 to Liverpool back in December but will hope to be more of a challenge for the title-challengers this weekend, as Eddie Howe 's side have been one of the form teams in the Premier League since January. In recent weeks they have looked stronger than ever, with Bruno Guimaraes looking fully up to speed in the heart of their midfield.

However, Klopp has got the better of Howe nine times already. The two managers have faced one another 11 times, with the Newcastle manager managing to pick up one draw and one win. Should Howe manage to come out on top this weekend, it would take some of the gloss off the positive news around Klopp's contract discussions.
