Liverpool to face Premier League opposition in Singapore as pre-season plans take shape

Liverpool will meet Crystal Palace in Singapore this summer as their pre-season plans take further shape.

The Reds will clash with Palace at Singapore's National Stadium on Friday July 15, the club have confirmed.

The fixture, which will see the two teams play for the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy, comes three days after Liverpool collide with Manchester United in Thailand.

Jurgen Klopp's side will take on United at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok in one of the first games of the Erik ten Hag era at Old Trafford.

Officials at both clubs have been keen to pencil in a lucrative fixture between the two giants of English football for some time and the ending of long-haul travel restrictions enables them to compete in a money-spinning pre-season match in Thailand.

This summer's tour is the first time Liverpool have visited Asia since 2017 having spent 2018 and '19 out in the United States. The last two years have been based at training camps in Europe, with the club unable to fly long haul because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Liverpool's commercial director, Ben Latty, said: "Pre-season is a vital time of year for our players, it’s hugely important preparation for the season ahead and it’s also a perfect opportunity to meet with our fans around the world.

“We can’t wait to get back to Singapore once again, we’ve received a tremendous welcome there in the past, and are excited to be taking part in the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022.

“We eagerly await the sound of our fans filling the National Stadium in Singapore as we take on Crystal Palace in July, it’s going to be a great finish to our 2022/23 pre-season.”

Traditionally, Liverpool view these tours as the 'commercial leg' of their pre-season preparations before Klopp and his backroom staff are able to put their squad through their paces in European-based training camps shortly before the campaign begins.

The tour also marks the club's first summer outside of Europe since 2019 when they played games across the United States after winning the Champions League. Liverpool have been limited to where they have been able to fly to in recent years because of the pandemic and spent the best part of a month out in Austria and France last year.

In 2020, the Reds also stayed near Salzburg, but the ending of restrictions now allows the club to embark on trips that will allow them to visit hotbeds of their worldwide support, such as Asia.

Patrick Lee, Cluster CEO, Singapore and ASEAN Markets (Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and representative offices), Standard Chartered said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Liverpool FC to Singapore as part of its pre-season in Asia.

“As the main club sponsor of Liverpool FC and title sponsor of this game, we’re looking forward to working with LFC and our partners in creating exciting ‘money-can’t-buy’ unique experiences possible for football fans, our clients and the community as live sporting events return to Singapore.”

The club will look to get involved in a number of local community-based projects during their time in Singapore and tickets for the match go on sale at 10am on May 17.
