Liverpool have been hit with a hammer blow ahead of their trip to face Rangers as Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been ruled out of the Champions League showdown.
The Reds' win over Gers at Anfield last week was a welcome respite from a domestic campaign that has not been kind to Jurgen Klopp and his team. Defeat to Arsenal over the weekend leaves them stranded in tenth with just two wins from their opening eight matches to all but dissolve their title hopes even at this early stage.
They still have designs on winning Group A though at the halfway point. Liverpool currently occupy second behind Napoli, who have a 100 per cent record, and will hope to make some ground on them on Wednesday night when they travel to Ibrox while Ajax go to Naples looking for some revenge.
Gio van Bronckhorst will be hoping to dent those ambitions as his own team look to salvage their chances of finishing third and dropping into the Europa League. They face a hurting Liverpool team and it emerged on Monday night that key winger Luis Diaz will miss the trip to Ibrox.
Now various reports down south say Alexander-Arnold, whose stunning free-kick opened the scoring in the first game, will miss the clash alongside Matip, normally the first-choice partner to Virgil van Dijk. Andy Robertson is also expected to miss out and it means Klopp will have to use the breadth of his squad as they look for another big Champions League result.
Ibrahima Konate looks to come in for Matip while Joe Gomez has been the deputy when Alexander-Arnold has been out this season - although former Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay will be pushing for some minutes with the usual starting right-back now out for two weeks.
