Liverpool striker sold for £6m last summer inspires historic European finish

Taiwo Awoniyi has inspired Union Berlin to a fifth place finish in the Bundesliga meaning they have secured qualification in the Europa League for the first time in the history of the club.

The Nigeria international was sold by Liverpool last summer for a reported fee of £6.5 million after struggling to secure a work permit to play football in England.

Awoniyi went on loan seven times during his time at Liverpool after he was brought to Anfield in 2015 for a fee of around £400,000.

Awoniyi's double, including an 88th minute winner in Berlin, could see him line-up against Liverpool's bitter rivals - Manchester United - in the Europa League next season.

This seasons Europa League final takes place on Wednesday as Eintracht Frankfurt take on Rangers in Sevilla.
