Liverpool striker completes surprise transfer as World Cup plan emerges

Liverpool striker Katie Stengel has completed a surprise summer loan move to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side NJ/NY Gotham FC.

The 31-year-old, who signed for Liverpool in January 2022, was one of the Reds' standout performers last term, scoring 10 goals in 26 appearances as Matt Beard's side secured a seventh-place finish in the Women's Super League [WSL]. Long-term injuries to fellow attackers Leanne Kiernan and Melissa Lawley forced Stengel to shoulder extra responsibility as the Reds sought to avoid being dragged into a relegation scrap in their first season back in the top flight.

However, the talismanic striker will be plying her trade a overseas for the next two months, with Liverpool confirming she has agreed a short-term deal in America. Stengel is set to provide cover for Gotham players away at the Women's World Cup, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

The Florida-native, who has previously played for several clubs in the NWSL – including Washington Spirit, Boston Breakers and Utah Royals, has already joined up with her new teammates and, pending international clearance, will be available for Gotham’s clash with Portland Thorns on Sunday.

Stengel's switch to states is, however, temporary, with the striker's loan deal set to expire on September 3. This will allow her to return to Liverpool ahead of the start of the WSL season, which begins on September 29.

The Reds have already bolstered their strike force for next season with the addition of former Leicester City striker Natasha Flint.
