Liverpool Street artist designs label for Southern Comfort

Liverpool street artist John Culshaw was commissioned to design the limited edition bottle label for Southern Comfort whiskey in the UK.

The special edition bottle, now in its third year, celebrates Mardi Gras held in New Orleans, USA, taking place on Tuesday, February 21. John also created a mural for the Mardi Gras which is situated in Liverpool's Baltic Triangle in Kings Brewery Village.

Mardi Gras, aka ‘Fat Tuesday’ is a celebration like no other, where people come together in their masses to celebrate the first party of the year. Its origins date back to the end of the 17th century to the French House of the Bourbons, and the tradition followed France to her colonies.

John told the ECHO: "I was approached via Instagram asking if I wanted to get involved in being part of designing bottles for the Mardi Gras addition. I just answered straight away and said yes.

“I knew it would be a big thing and a lot of publicity for me. I'm still at the beginning of my career, so all this opportunity is a quick yes from me."

He added: "They also commissioned me to do a mural for Mardi Gras in Liverpool, which is at Kings Brewery Village, Baltic Triangle."

Southern Comfort was created in 1874 by M.W. Heron in New Orleans, Louisiana who wanted a whiskey that was not too harsh. He came up with the iconic smooth tasting recipe blending fruit and spices.

The limited edition bottle is available in UK supermarkets with a chance to win a trip to the 2024 Mardi Gras in New Orleans by scanning the bottles QR code.

In designing the bottle cover John worked with New Orleans artist Brandan ‘BMIKE’ Odums. BMIKE has been the creative partner of Southern Comfort Mardi Gras bottles for the last three years.

John added: "It was a boss project to be a part of and seeing one of your designs in the shops is crazy and not something you expect this early on in your career. It was nice to work with BMIKE.

John has created eye-catching murals across the city including Ringo Starr and Nelson Mandela.
