Liverpool potential Champions League last-16 opponents after Ajax win

Liverpool have now secured their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Reds beat Ajax 3-0 at the John Cruyff ArenA to book their spot in the last-16 of the competition. Goals from Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott secured the win in Amsterdam.

Jurgen Klopp’s side can now relax for their final group game at home to Napoli next week. The Italian outfit beat Rangers - to almost secure top spot in Group A.

Despite beating Ajax, Liverpool have a tough task to secure top spot in the group. Napoli’s win over Rangers means that the Reds are three points behind the Serie A club going into the meeting at Anfield next Tuesday.

For Liverpool to finish top, they would need to secure a four-goal win to better the 4-1 defeat they were handed in Naples at the start of September.

In terms of the rest of the competition, so far 11 clubs have secured qualification to the knockout rounds after four matches. Club Brugge, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Porto join Liverpool and Napoli in having their spots in the last-16 confirmed.

Italian giants Juventus will not be in contention though, as a 4-3 defeat to Benfica on Tuesday night saw them eliminated. Barcelona are also out and will be in the Europa League in the New Year, after they lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich, with Sadio Mane on the scoresheet.

Were Liverpool to finish second in the group, they will face a group winner in the last-16. However, were Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur all to finish top of their respective groups then that would reduce the number of clubs the Reds could face significantly.

The draw for the last-16 of the Champions League is due to take place on Monday, November 7. Liverpool’s final group match is at home to Napoli on November 1.
