Liverpool starlet Trent Kone-Doherty breaks silence after Derry City move

Liverpool's latest signing 16-year-old Trent Kone-Doherty has described joining the Reds as 'surreal' after completing his switch from Derry City.

The youngster becomes the latest addition at the Academy following the arrival of Ben Doak as the pair look set to join Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's U18s side.

Liverpool's change in recruitment continues as they look to take a more localised approach following rules changes regarding youth signings due to Brexit. Following the changes, overseas players under 18 can no longer be acquired.

Kone-Doherty officially completed his move to the Reds and was previously listed as a member of Derry’s first-team squad. The attacker has featured for the Republic of Ireland at youth level, turning out for their U16 and U17s scoring twice.

Taking to Instagram, the 16-year-old wrote: "Surreal to have signed with this great club @liverpoolfc. Excited for what the future holds!"

Among the comments is Bobby Clark, who has impressed since his move from Newcastle, and Stefan Bajcetic - who recently featured for Liverpool on their tour of South East Asia.

Derry City's U17s manager, speaking to the Derry Journal in June, said: "Liverpool, in particular, go for quality over quantity, they don’t go for big numbers at their academy.

"It’s a credit to everybody who has worked with Trent down the years from his boys club coaches and to every coach that has had him at Derry City, they have all helped him on that journey to get to Liverpool.

"Obviously there’s a lot of natural ability and his family will also have put in a lot of work with him as well."
