Luis Diaz finds himself embroiled in a FIFA complaint following his Porto exit in January
The Colombian made the switch to Liverpool after the Reds beat Tottenham to his signature. Diaz had been hugely impressive in Portugal, where he spent three years. Porto have long enjoyed the fruits of the South American market and added the now Reds star back in 2019 from Barranquilla FC.
When they signed him it was stated that Barranquilla FC were entitled to retain 20 per cent of his economic rights. That enabled them to a portion of his next transfer fee - but that has not yet been paid following Diaz's £40million move to Anfield. As a result a complaint has been lodged with FIFA as the club seek an outstanding payment of £7.7m, according to reports in Colombia.
Liverpool had been eyeing a summer move for the 25-year-old, but were forced to act quicker than they had planned when Tottenham looked set to steal a march in January. The north Londoners hesitated when it came to the deal which saw the player move to Merseyside.
Diaz has proved to be a massive hit since moving to the Premier League. He's scored 6 times in 22 outings for Liverpool as they chase the quadruple, including a much needed equaliser in the draw with Tottenham last time out. The winger has slotted straight into the club's forward line.
He's drawn huge praise in just a few months and looks set to be a fixture for Jurgen Klopp's side going forward. The German told Sky Sports recently: "There is a reason why you sign a player. The reason is the quality that he has. The reason is the way that he is playing the game. With Luis, where it has been really special is that when we saw him we knew that he would fit in immediately. That is really difficult usually but because he did not have to change, that is why we have a really confident boy here.
"He was in a really good moment with Porto, playing good for Colombia, and so he came here full of confidence. But what we tried to make sure is that he does not lose that because of the playbook as we tell him that he has to do this and he has to do that. We want him to be natural."
Diaz's teammates have been equally as impressed with Andy Robertson saying last week: “He’s been special. We’ve tried to help him as much as we can. We know how difficult it is coming in in January and we’ve tried to get him up to speed. He’s a special, special player and the talent he has, and will to win, fits us perfectly."
