Liverpool star in transfer U-turn as Bournemouth deal now 'unlikely'

Neco Williams is likely to stay at Liverpool, despite speculation linking him with a move to Bournemouth.

That's according to The Athletic, who claim that the Wales youngster is keen to stay and fight for minutes at Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp's men likely to be battling it out for silverware on several fronts.

The situation could yet change, such is the frantic nature of deadline day, but as things stand an exit is looking unlikely at this stage.

Reports over the weekend had claimed that Williams had cut short a recent holiday in Dubai to thrash out his future, with sources on Merseyside claiming the 20-year-old was subject of an enquiry from Championship side Bournemouth.

The Cherries are already on the cusp of landing his Wales team-mate Kieffer Moore in a deal that is likely to be worth around £5m, and were believed to be exploring the possibility of taking Williams on loan.

Williams is highly rated at Anfield, but has played just eight times for the Reds this season.

Previous indications had suggested that the player and the club were open to a move away in order for the youngster to pick up valuable first-team minutes, with Williams firmly stuck behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in the pecking order of Klopp's plans.

Nevertheless, at this stage, it appears as though he will staying to fight for his place in what is a crucial year for club and country.

Wales face a World Cup play-off semi-final against Austria in March, with either Scotland or Ukraine waiting for them in the final.

Boss Rob Page has understandably emphasised the importance of his key players getting regular game-time, although Liverpool boss Klopp clearly believes there is plenty of value in keeping him around.

The German said: "We are really short of players. The last thing I’m thinking about is who could go on loan in the winter.

“In Neco’s case, I can 100 per cent understand that my colleague from Wales said he thinks it would make sense that they play.

“But they are nearly qualified or can qualify for the World Cup with a lot of players who are not first choice in their teams.

“So I think it makes absolute sense that Neco is here developing every day, and that’s what he’s doing. And to fight through the situation, that’s what he’s doing.

“Just going on loan, you never know where they will end up – not Neco, but in general.

“First and foremost you have to make sure you fight where you are, because if you don’t sort your problems where you are, you will carry them with you to the next club as well."
