Cody Gakpo was left with visible cuts following Tyrone Mings' dangerous challenge on the Liverpool forward.
Attempting to win possession of the ball, the Aston Villa defender misjudged the situation and caught Gakpo on the chest with his left boot. Brandished a yellow card by referee John Brooks for this high foot, a subsequent VAR check for a potential red card took place before it was decided to stick with the on-field decision.
On the receiving end of more misfortune after the restart, Gakpo was denied an equalising goal after Virgil van Dijk was deemed to be offside during the build-up to this move.

Unaware his finish was set to be ruled out, the former PSV Eindhoven attacked wheeled away in celebration. In doing so, the damage caused by Mings' challenge quickly became clear. Lifting his shirt up, stud marks caused by the Villa centre-back could be seen.
Liverpool eventually pulled one goal back against Unai Emery's side, Roberto Firmino fittingly scoring at the Kop end on his final Anfield appearance for the club, but could not find a winning strike in ten minutes of additional time.
