Liverpool spark Premier League title race into life with ruthless Arsenal win

And now ladies and gentlemen, we really do have a title race on our hands.

Liverpool cut Manchester City’s lead at the top to just one point with a ruthless, clinical and priceless win at the Emirates.

It is now nine wins in a row for Liverpool, they are on fire and on the march as just two months ago they were 14 points adrift of City and now they are breathing down Pep Guardiola’s neck.

The away end celebrated wildly, they knew what a big moment this is in the context of the title race not just because City dropped two points at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

But also because Arsenal was a big test, they have been on a winning roll and yet it came down to small margins, the difference between good players and great players as Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino sealed it with second half goals.

Incredibly, Liverpool now have 69 points which equals their tally for the whole of last season and they are hitting form just at the right time while City have stuttered.

But it was also a tale of two keepers as Alisson Becker made a priceless save from Martin Odegaard just four minutes before Jota made the breakthrough after a rare mistake by Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal are improving, they are making strides under Mikel Arteta and could get into the top four this season but they are still a work in progress especially when it comes to beating any of the big boys. It is a blind spot they have struggled to overcome.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have got the bit between their teeth. They just cannot stop winning, they have only conceded four goals in this calendar year and it was easy to see why as Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Andy Robertson were superb again.

Robertson was outstanding both defensively and on the attack as he provided an assist as the away end sang his name over and over again.

Plus they have five world class forwards. What was really frightening was the sight of Jota scoring and then immediately being substituted along with Luis Diaz to bring on Mo Salah and Firmino to go up front with Sadio Mane.

No-one can live with that sort of firepower. It was Arsenal’s undoing and as much as they huffed and puffed, Gabriel Martinelli was a thorn in Liverpool’s side all night - no wonder Jurgen Klopp called him the “talent of the century” - but they are still a work in progress.

Arsenal did play well and it was actually Liverpool who nearly blinked first just after the restart.

Thiago’s dreadful back pass played in Alexandre Lacazette, the Arsenal No9 pulled it back for Odegaard whose shot was brilliantly blocked by Alisson.

Then the game turned on that moment. Thiago made up for his previous error as he threaded through a delicious slide rule pass to release Jota for the 55th minute.

Jota cut in from the left, the Portugal forward then hit a low shot which beat Ramsdale who committed the cardinal sin of being beaten at his near post.

If that was not enough, Klopp then made his double substitution and it was Firmino who got the second after 63 minutes. Arsenal failed to clear their lines, Robertson looped round the back and his low cross was steered in by Firmino.

The wind had been taken out of Arsenal’s sails while Liverpool are flying - and look unstoppable.
